Bolded quote sums it up. It's truly the sweet spot of a 4 banger. Tough as nails, most service can be done yourself and the labor cost to work on is cheaper than the V6 as well.

I was shocked to at first how slow it is, but honestly its not needed for me. Its a freaking truck. Enjoy the reliability!

Agree with most you said. A regear will increase torque to the wheels.
A regear will not increase maximum HP of the engine.
A regear will not increase top speed and in most circumstances will decrease top speed.
It can improve response as you accelerate through the gears.

The 4 in a tacoma was a workhorse back in the day when it was 1000 lbs. lighter. Not so much today. That 4 cy has worn out its welcome for anything but a grocery getter.
As far as the v6, i have no complaint with mine. I test drove an sr 4 cylinder tacoma 4x4, and in no way would i own one....these 3rd gen taco's got way too porky for them.

Farmers and ranchers here buy them by the dozen, mainly for servicing irrigation. That and exterminators…still pretty much a workhorse. I almost bought one, felt good enough for most of my driving.

as for the OP, want a fast 4 cyl truck trade it in on a Ranger.

If you want to go faster than the speed limit on a small displacement 4, trade the truck for a Veloster N.

I dont like going faster than 70 with my tuned 3.5, 90 is just silly. The Tacoma is not the appropriate tool for "go fast."

I probably should have mentioned what you said but given that you are wanting some more pep out of it, I figured you already knew all of this, which from what you are saying seems like you do.

There are tradeoffs to be had with a regear, including top speed, change in cruising RPM (which can lead to some fuel economy loss), etc etc.. You just gotta decide if it's right for you.

Also, these trucks have no business going past 90 mph. Seriously. If you want to go fast, you need a sports car.

Coming back from a dirt bike ride yesterday on the interstate, guy in a lifted Ram diesel, with the tow mirrors in the erect position. Blew past me like I was standing still, weaving in and out of traffic, even went into one of the exit ramps to pass people then shot back in, as soon as he did that we hit a wall of stopped traffic. As I rolled pass him, shouted out the window…so was all that worth it!? And laughed at him. Got a upturned hand and eye roll in return. lol!

Can’t tell you how many times I plunk along at the speed limit and end up right beside them at the next light, or even in front of them.

All these posts about making the Tacoma faster…ATTENTION: YOU BOUGHT THE WRONG TRUCK! lol!

I wish I could find an old mad magazine cartoon I read as a kid. Part of a optimist/pessimist two panel joke. The first panel said something about owning a nice 200mph sports car... the second panel was captioned "...only to sit in traffic like a schmuck."

That stuck with me. It was the perfect illustration of how going fast does absolutely nothing except waste money and tell the world that you're an asshole. :cookiemonster:

    LOL!

There was a luxury car commercial a few years back (can’t remember the brand) pretty much showed the same thing, spend all this money to look cool, just to sit in traffic.

The assjackery I see on the interstate, man! Only travel it if I have to.

There’s a fix coming down the pipeline it’s actually at the vendor right now getting a Haltech and proper tune done. Or there’s the famous LS or now LT w/ direct injection engine swap.
Oh, my .02 cents is stay away from that thing URD sells because they constantly give up the ghost. Ask me how I know…

Yeah they are working on it! It’s been there going on three weeks. They had some of the mounts and brackets made from steel that they are now machining from aluminum and anodizing them black. They didn’t like my polished air intake tube so they are having it powder coated. They want it to look a 100% factory.

*Edit* Ok guys this was the OP’s first post so please give the guy a bit of a break it’s not the way Tacoma World should treat a “Newbie”. Plus I’m guessing this is the gentleman’s first Tacoma.
We all know that the 2TR is gutless so show just a little bit more respect. Yes I know we all like to have fun but seriously guys please welcome him to the forum.
Ok you can fire away at me because I’ve been here a little while.
