You could throw a big old turbo on the 2.7 and all 3 trucks listed above will still be faster.

Definitely got the wrong truck for that. 3.5 is a pretty nice on the highway actually. Maybe trade in for a v6?

    Well when I was 16, I bought myself a mazda b2200 with about 90hp. Now that’s slow.

    At 16 I could’ve only dreamed about a 4cyl Tacoma.

    Think he is feeling inadequate…

Oh I “get it” for the need for speed at the age of 16, also had my licenses suspended for drag racing 3 months after getting it…

Yep. I do completely understand as well.

I lost my license 6-7 times when I was 16-22 years old. Now I’m almost 34 and been pulled over 4 times in last 10 years or so.

Almost lost it again in my 20s for too many points, had to go to drivers survival school a couple few times. Why I drive the speed limit now.

The 2.7L 4 cylinder Tacoma is a PERFECT engine for you (and my 16 year old son Garrett) for your first 4 to 5 years of driving.
We drove his Tacoma on a fishing trip this weekend:
    500 lbs of passengers
150 lbs of fishing tackle / ice chests
75 mph interstate speed limit (so running with traffic at 80 mph)

We have the points system as well. When you are a new driver you basically can’t get any tickets, because that’s 3 points and your license is gone. There are some tickets that are 2 points but I can’t even remember which ones.

Nowdays I’m the guy in the right lane taking her easy. At times I feel like punching it but that’s usually on a freeway ramp.

IMHO that Tacoma is more than perfect for a 16 year old. But when you are 16, you think a bit differently.:)

Well that explains it. Been a long time since I was 16.
Have you tried pushing the ECT button? It changes the shift points and holds the gears a little longer, improved acceleration when coming from a stop. I use it for when I’m driving around town and rural roads around 45 mph.
Why not just concentrate on making your truck look good? That’s what the girls like anyway ;)

Going from a Toyota 2.7l Na to a Ford 2.7EcoBoost turbo will be night and day. My 2.7EB got 24mpg and had great acceleration.

The 2.7 uses Toyota's bus and van engine. It's cheap and very reliable. That's its niche. The Ford turbo 4 will blow up long before any serious repairs will be needed on the Tacoma. The Taco might be a lot slower, but that's just the trade off you're making as a consumer. Maybe the future Tacoma turbo 4 cyl will be as reliable, but I doubt it. The 6 cyl Tacoma seems to be a good choice for a lot of people, but you're going to pay a bit more for the bigger engine.

Keep in mind that the year on cost for the 4 cylinder makes it a good investment if you keep it for more than 5-6 years. My old 22re was 21 years old when I sold it to the junk yard.

Also 90 mph seems fast on a body on frame truck. Wouldn't make more sense to get a BRZ or WRX if you want a sports car? Even a used BMW would be better suited to fast driving than a pick up.

Well except for an exterminator like orkin having sr 4 cylinder taco's, but they do rather light duty service work. I've seen most others with the 6 cylinder for their fleet trucks. Even our local water company has 6 cylinder sr 3rd gen trucks, and now they have been testing the new rangers with the ecoboost motor...they need to tow air compressors for jack hammer use, or tow other loaded trailers at times.

I wish my 22re lasted like that. It was pretty tired around 100k. Even the exhaust manifold developed a large crack, and began leaking so bad i had buy a new one. The final demise was the body got so rusted in 8 years the truck became worth nothing.

Yeah they are pretty much for light duty, the farmers just have basic hand tools in them and not much else, basically a run around vehicle check on the fields and driving out to the tractors.

Seems like most light duty service work have moved to those city vans for the most part, and rarely see small pickups anymore.
