    Hey everyone,
Looks like my rear drum brakes are completely shot — I don’t think they’ve ever been replaced. On top of that, both axle seals are leaking, so it’s time to tackle the whole job.

Since I’ll be pulling the axles anyway, I figured I might as well replace the drums and everything while I’m in there. Does anyone know where I can get a full drum brake kit (preferably pre-assembled) to save some time on the install?

    Appreciate any recommendations or tips!

I have never seen a loaded drum brake kit for a Tacoma like you would for a boat or travel trailer. The best advise I can give is take pictures of each side before you take it apart. The shoes look the same but they arnt, notice how the springs are attached, open end on the inside or outside and replace all of the hardware.

Visit Rock Auto to purchase a full kit. Drums/Wheels will be separate. But if you are doing full springs and things. There are Full Kits for that. Just did both of mine like 2 months ago. Was pretty Easy. Drums where really stuck on and its a little bit of a pain to get the drum off and to compress the Brakes in.

I don’t think a pre assembled kit would help you. The parking brake cables need the shoes to be disassembled to get them off and back on. Can’t pull the axles without disconnecting them. Beyond that, a fully loaded drum backer with the works on it would make the press job suck, if not be impossible to get the studs into the plate and into the new bearing.

I’d just buy an OEM shoe kit + OEM hardware kit, and install per YouTube instructions. It’s really not bad.

Make sure you get the proper Toyota axle bearing puller tool.
