I have a 2016 and wanted to put a 2020 headunit in with appleplay. The dealership said it would not work (fit) but I think it's because of just the part numbers changing. Has anyone done a retrofit one a 2016 like this?

You need an adapter. The wiring harnesses are different.

You would likely get something better with an after market system. Get one from Crutchfield that works with the Mastero datalink you won't loose any factory options.

Going aftermarket would be cheaper here. And have wireless carplay

I was looking the other day. Wireless car play and Android auto are still spendy options but you could still get it wired and have a better head unit too.

I just installed an aftermarket hu with Android auto. It is last year's model but that saved me a bunch of money.

I spent about 1k and was able to retain everything except gps in the dash display.

What do you do for GPS? Just use your phone? Curious bc I did the same as you (Alpine Halo 9) and lost the GPS, but hate when I need a GPS and I have 0 service.

It is possible to put a newer OEM head unit in older models, it requires a harness made by autoharnesshouse. However, going with an aftermarket unit is going to be better IMO.

Android auto and carplay use the phone for GPS. I did install the adapter that allows the head unit to use the factory gps since it would be nice in a pinch.

The other fun part is I had to build an adapter to use the factory mic. Not hard to do but was something that I wasn't expecting

Aftermarket is going to be probably be alot more useful unless there are entune specific features that you want or the OEM install look.

Nice, I went with the avic-8500. Still working on the aftermarket mic. Apparently I sound like I am underwater or driving with the windows down.
