Awesome thread with lots of great posts, I think I read up until page 300, then started at the end and worked backwards a couple hundred pages.

I am looking for your opinion. I prefer to go shooting with handguns. However, every once in a while, I do take long guns to the range. I have been wanting a pistol AR for a couple years. Especially with the Vertex slings and bags out. Looking to have something a little mobile, that I ran throw in the Tacoma on trips or whatever.

I have two M4’s. RRA and Bushmaster. RRA is about 13 years old and the bushy has got to be over 15 years old. The RRA weight is crazy, it is just a heavy gun. I have removed the rear sight and the Surefire pistol grip light trying to make it lighter. The bushy doesn’t have rails and cannot have rails, I think the hand guards are pinned for the ban at the time of purchase.

So, my question is - can I or should I take the bushy lower and make it into a pistol? I have no background in building AR’s but there is lots of information out there on the subject. Is it even worth it with the bushy lower. I can get to two different PSA store fronts from where I live, so I was just going to buy an upper. Oh course, now that I am looking at uppers, they have so many to choose, lol. Can I add a pistol stock easily enough? I am encourage by the group and wealth of knowledge, thank you for reading this and commenting.9995DBAD-D542-481D-B239-6AE96EF753CB.jpg

Technically I don't think you can turn a rifle into a pistol without paperwork

You'd be better off starting fresh with a new build

Buy an Aero lower and then whatever parts suit your fancy

JB is right here, if it was initially a rifle, it's always a rifle and can't be a pistol, it can only be converted to an NFA item. The reverse doesn't apply, so you need to start with a virgin receiver or a pistol receiver.

On the upside, I really doubt your bushy cannot be changed to a railed setup or a basic magpul handguard

FWIW personally I have never bothered to do this on a build, and never suffered any consequences for not doing so.

That is why I bought the RRA, the bushy handguard cannot be removed. I actually took it to the gun shop - they tried to swap it out; and ended up with the RRA. I will probably just buy a new 16" upper for it.

Pretty sure it is pinned. How can I check? I thought it had something to do with the regulations at the time.

    Very well could be

Sometimes you can see the pin and weld, but past that, heat the muzzle device and give it your best Ugga dugga with the proper wrench and see if it comes apart

It could be your bushy is a 14.5 with pinned muzzle to meet the 16” requirement

But that shouldn't affect the removal of the hand guard.

I am looking at it now, it looks like the muzzle / flash suppressor is pinned, it looks like the handguard is permanent. It does not look like it is two pieces, like a normal M-16 that splits in halves. Make sense?
