Yeah, if I were hunting deer with my AR, I'd be taking neck shots too. I normally hunt with a .45-70 guide gun, puts em down right there. .223 is a little small for my confidence on deer, but my friends say that .45-70 may be a bit much. I don't care what they say, it puts em down with one shot, every time.

Thanks. I was hunting in Vermont, so that is about the average range, and about the max range I'd feel confident to take a shot with a 223. Typically I hunt with at least a 243.

The last time I went out I had two doe walk across the old logging road I was on about 20 yards off. I had the pistol up, peaking through the scope hoping a buck was following them. Nope...

Nothing is worse than just injuring a deer or having it bleed out slowly where you can't track it.

Common caliber here in Maine as we're heavily forested and most shots are under 30yds.

I've done that before. Found hair and blood, but the blood trail was nil and I never recovered that one. Made a bad shot with my .308, 30 ft up a pine tree, on a windy morning, a hundred yards away.

I shot that buck with a HSM 430 grain hard cast flat nosed bullet. It blew a lot of lung and heart matter out the other side, and left a blood trail that Ray Charles could follow.

I did that on my Sig 716 DMR (older model) and with optics and accessories I have more in it than I've paid for most of the vehicles I've owned.

Please don't anyone tell my wife that.

I see it! Those are typical woods down here in Bama during the winter months. Can't shoot real far, perfect bow country if you like that sort of thing too.

My wife hunts with a .243. It's the perfect deer caliber IMO. That and the .30-30 is all you really need for white tail around here. Kills em dead without too much bloodshot meat.

Not too sure on out of state license. No tags required here, unless it's a special hunt sponsored by the Conservation Department. Our deer season is probably the most generous in the nation. Starts weekend before Thanksgiving and is over middle of February. 2 does a day, or one buck one doe a day, and 3 buck limit per season. I don't imagine the out of state fees would be too bad considering our deer friendly hunting season.

Just looked it up and it's $66 for out of state. We have tons of National Forest and State Parks here you can hunt.

I went to college in Pensacola and hunted in Alabama with some friends who lived there. I was floored at the (at the time) 1 per day limit. Here in Maine it's 1 per season.

Yeah, it's 2 doe a day here now. Shows how generous our deer population is. Yeah, it would suck to live where the seasons are so short. I use hunting season to fill my freezer full of meat, so my family can eat off of it for the next year until the new season starts. 4 or 5 deer usually do the trick.

If I recall, dogs could also be used on deer. I remember setting up on these dirt roads that were in grid patterns... waiting for the deer to come out from the dogs pushing them. Deer were much smaller than here...being so far north.

Well, if ya ever make it down this way, hit me up. I can surely show you some areas to hunt. They would be the same areas that I hunt myself!

They mostly outlawed running of dogs for deer down here, but there are a handful of counties that still allow it.
