If you are on reddit, look in their GAFS section. I just searched and a faxon 9mm bcg just sold on there 2 days ago for $100 shipped. That place has so many users new ads are posted ever few seconds basically.

My first AR was an Anderson lower with PSA upper. It was cheap, but ran fine. I kept it about a year until I started building my own. I'd say start somewhere like that and go from there. You can figure out what you like/dislike.

    Or............
Primary Arms, add a BCG, CH, and sights. Well under $1200

If you're state does private to private sales and you have a good local forum with a good classified in there you can probably get a lot of rifle for $1200.
On my local board I see complete BCM for $1200. If you're buying new from a shop and paying retail, then your dollar is not going to go as far understandably.

Buy this, add the ch for $40.
    https://bravocompanyusa.com/bcm-sta...upper-receiver-group-w-bcm-mcmr-15-handguard/

Plus this when in stock. They come back in stock in and out every couple weeks at various places between $350-400
    https://www.primaryarms.com/bravo-company-mfg-complete-lower-receiver-assembly-cosmetic-blem

    Then $100 toolcraft bcg
    https://palmettostatearmory.com/ble...penter-158-bolt-carrier-group-516446915b.html
If you can get the lower for $350 then you have a complete bcm gun with the exception of the BCG, which toolcraft is quality, for under $1200
    $697+40+350+99=$1186

I know of a place in ga that has one BCM blem lower in stock left for $349. With tax it was $373 out the door.

A complete upper from BCM mated with a complete lower from Aero Precision should get you under the $1200 mark with a decent reliable setup. And you should have a little money left over for accessories.

I am not an "expert", so take my opinion for what it's worth...free.

do what this guy suggests \/\/

it’s a rock solid setup that’ll do everything you want the first time and won’t leave wanting to build a second rifle months afterwards because you went cheap the first time with some psa garbage.

Here’s my stripped aero lower filled with some hand picked goodies and complete bcm upper.

Agree with other suggestions. Aero and BCM are solid choices in that price range.

Upgrading in the future will cost more money. Not only in the parts you buy to upgrade but these things have a tendency to multiply. Once you get a few spare parts lying around you start to think "well I'm only an upper receiver and a barrel away from a spare complete upper so... might as well." Then it's "well it's nice to have a spare upper but it would be even better to have a spare rifle." And before you know it your safe is overflowing and you can't gripe at your wife anymore about all of her shoes because she's just gonna gripe about your ARs.

Better plan than mine. Will save a good bit and still be super good quality. If you're not down to build the lower, you can get completed aero lowers for $260 I believe.

$1200 is a healthy budget to start with and can carry you a good way into this depending on choices. Is your budget supposed to be for just the rifle with iron sights or a complete rifle with accessories like optics, sling, light etc? I feel safe in saying all of us in here have our own ideas of how we like our rifles set up. After you make the purchase and you start shooting you’ll hopefully be hooked and enjoy it then all the options to upgrade are a rabbit hole that’s fun to dive into. Just like with our trucks what is right for me may not be right for others. The members in here are very helpful with helping you figure out the pros and cons of certain upgrades.
