i'm sure you know more about this than i do, and you obviously have some inside info........but why would they design a new lower receiver for 6.8 when it fits into the 5.56 lower? barrel, bolt and mag and you are ready to rock with 6.8.....i mean, they had to do it for the ar10-.308 platform but it doesn't make sense (to me) for 6.8

if this is true i may hold off on my 6.8 build

Because there are no reliable mag sources, and the rounds didn't roll in the magazines that were meant for 5.56 magwells thus had more feeding problems than was acceptable for a lot of government agencies. The larger well also gives the ammo companies some room to improve on projectile lengths and shapes. Basically Magpul developed the best possible mag for the round from scratch and the rifle company developed the rifle around it.

well fuck....if that's the case, they'll probably change the cartridge and it'll no longer be 6.8x43, so it'd be pointless to build that
plus, whatever magpul builds a mag for will be the preferred platform....just look at which variants are winning the ar-10/.308 battle....the ones that accept .308 pmags

No it is staying in its current spec as far as case size and charge weights so the new stuff being developed will still work with existing 6.8 stuff. Part of the reason why the 6.8 is so popular is because the caliber size and case/charge size combine to make a round that is VERY effective in SBRs. Change case/charge weight and it will most likely loose some of that effect. For all intents and purposes the round is perfect for its intended role, its just that a lot of the older 6.8 rifles based in 5.56 lowers did have reliability problems. This magpul mag and magwell dimension actually solves this problem like a charm. The rifle I pictured is actually a dedicated 6.8 rifle with the magwell dimensions changed. LWRCI, Magpul, and Federal (I am pretty sure about that) have all gone in together to take this round to the next level. LWRCI made the magwell dimensions available to ANYBODY who wants to use them for free. So you may see a Colt or Barret with this same set up some time down the road.

Delton Upper, Yankee lower, Magpul Seights along with Vert grip, UTG hard guard UTG optics. I'm thinking of getting rid of the UTG optics for a eoTech sight. I also have a CMMG .22 bolt

If it works for you, leave it until it doesn't. Until; then buy ammo and shoot the thing.

There are reliable mags for the 6.8. PRI, ASC, now C-Prod defense. There aren't reliable polymer mags for the 6.8 because they have to be thinned to much to work and therefore they bulge. The new platform (yes it is LWRC and federal. We already have federal 6.8 brass on the 68forums we are testing) will have a larger mag well allowing thicker polymer mags to deal with bulging. The round will still be the same dimensions. In fact the larger mag well lower will work with a standard upper but their lines (cosmetic) won't line up is all. As for wolf ammo they have not said they would or would not make any, Tula said they would be in production by next year.

If you are a Reloader the PRI and the new CPD mags are desired over the others as it allows you to load the 6.8 ammo to 2.30. The 6.8 really gains by being loaded long.

6.8 SPC on left, 5.56 or right

The difference in diameter is 1.1 millimeters. I still find it hard to believe that they can't thin down a pmag by less than half a millimeter and make it work. Hell, if that's the case, aluminum mags should work fine as they are at least that much thinner than pmags.

My understanding is that the lower will NOT work on existing 5.56 sized uppers.

If you tried to thjin the PMAG down, its like SF said, it would bulge. My understanding is that they also couldn't thin the mag without hurting the feed lips. Whatever the case is, I am buying the new 6.8 and about 20 mags when it comes out.

The last thing their rep told us over on 68Forums is that it will work just might look a little odd. Nice zombie. Headed down to my property to shoot a little today. Hate shooting in 100+ weather.

I've got to get down there to check my game cams so may as well toss out the QIT targets and get a little trigger time. Definitely not setting up steel though. Can't wait until it cools back down.
