shoot it with the mosin, have the flames roast it, and have it land on the bayonet perfectly skewered to feast with our brothers from the Motherland.

I love it when a plan comes together.

I shoot hogs with AK 74. But have never shot one as big as that.

Pretty standard with Magpul furniture, stock Rogers Super-Stoc and rear MBUS flip up site. Working on an optic as of now (it has a removable carry handle as well). Also have a Colt HBAR rifle with Magpul furniture as well and older Colt carry-handle mounted scope.

I am an AR15 armorer as well but with everything else going on my long guns, along with my handguns, have been sitting in the safe.

Can someone give me a brief rundown on buffer weights? I have a complete 16" PTAC upper, carbine length gas system and have everything to put it together except the buffer itself. I am looking at PSA's website and see 4 options:
    Carbine buffer weight unknown
    H Buffer @ 3.7 oz
    H2 Buffer @ 4.5 oz
    H3 Buffer @ 5.4 oz

This particular firearm will just be a recreational target shooter. I've been reading some other forums and there's almost too much information, my head is spinning! :help:

Mike, For carbine length I would get an H and call it a day. Or see if someone has a spare "C" buffer they will give you for cheap/free.

People get super technical with buffers but it doesnt have to be complicated on a standard rifle.

Thanks! I was getting overwhelmed the more I read. I kept seeing people saying that with the carbine length gas system, minor adjustments can have huge impacts. I'll go with H and see what happens

I've read a lot about buffer weights in trying to make my 7.62 cycle right and this is what I've learned first hand.

AR-15s, unlike most modern guns, are direct impingement, so there is a lot of unhindered and unobstructed energy coming from the gases shooting back into the chamber to cycle the action. Since the original M16 is designed to be shot full auto, that amount of inertia caused a very fast action and made the M16 hard to control. They then made a bunch of different weighted buffers to affect the spring rate and inertia to slow down the action to make the M16 easier to handle.

We are shooting civilian AR15s which we can't fire full auto, so cyclical rate doesn't really affect us. However we are still shooting the AR15s on a system that was designed to shoot full auto.

You're building a carbine rifle, which means the gas port is super close to the chamber, which will give you more pressure than mid length or rifle length upper builds. This means that, ceteris paribus, you will experience more recoil than mid length and rifle length. A heavier buffer weight will compensate for that heavier recoil by slowing down the action and making it no slam into the buffer tube when you shoot.

In my piston upper, I run with almost no buffer weights. The piston system leeches a lot of energy compared to the DI system. With no buffer weight, and using low power ammo, in a piston upper, my AR has absolutely no recoil. it's like shooting a bb gun almost.

keep in mind that a heavy buffer weight might cycle certain ammo, but if you use low powered Russian ammo, it may short stroke.

Just my $.02. I expect to be corrected anytime now.

Thanks for the help! I appreciate the dumbed down version, the AR15 forum has a lot of great info, but it's almost too much at times... I'll buy the H buffer and see what it does. This should complete the carbine, next one will be rifle length :D
