So I finally got to shoot my AR more, put my Dad's colt lower on my upper and my lower on my dads upper to see which was causing the short stroking, but ran perfect for the 20 rounds I put through each of them, then I put my lower back on my upper and ran 10 rounds through it flawlessly, and 10 rounds through dads colt and it ran perfect.

Then I shot some other guns, reloaded a mag and started shooting my gun, 3 rounds in and I had a good ejection, but the next round didn't get picked up, next round didn't fully eject, and this cycle continued with the occasional proper function, put the colt lower back on my upper and it still continued, and I used 3 different brands of ammo (PMC, Wolf brass cased, and some other stuff).
    Any thoughts?

sounds like as your rifle heats up, gas pressure is being lost somewhere. Check to make sure your gas block is seated right. Try swapping BCGs between the two uppers.

did you use steel and brass or just brass,

I have seen this at work before, usually if your gas block has a slight leak it will be sealed by residue build up, but if you want you can always remove it and measure the ID of the GB an OD of the barrel and compare the two,

other option that was a freak fix was the mag....try a few scenarios and write the results down and compare what was the reoccurring root cause

I'l try that when I get a chance, I just got a new job so I can afford toys, but I'm working 50-55 hours a week.

    Just brass.

Cool, sounds like gas block is my best option, I've used Pmags, IMI defense mags, and a few mags (I think Promag) from my CA legal days.

Were the malfunctions all with the same mag? Generally mags are te first suspect.

I've been thinking for some time to try and build an AR pistol. I'm new to AR's have have been doing a lot of reading.....

My experience so far has been that the dedicated AR forums seem to frown upon budget builds and have little time to discuss options for guns that aren't in the 1,000's of dollars. I have limited funds and am looking to put something together that will be reliable and somewhat accurate. It will be a range gun, truck gun and for shits and giggles will probably make a couple of my coyote hunting trips.

Here's the info on an upper I'm looking at. Never heard of the company before and would appreciate feedback from anyone having experience with them OR who could recommend a similar upper in the price range. This package is $280

The Radical Firearms 10.5" Upper Receiver is a flat top, law-enforcement grade, drop in receiver, ready to be mounted to any Mil-Spec AR-15 lower receiver! This fully mil-spec compliant receiver provides a high-quality upper for any level budget or shooter. Comes complete and assembled with Upper Receiver, Forward Assist, Ejection Port Door, Barrel Nut. 10.5" Profile Barrel and A2 Flash Hider. Bolt Carrier Group and Charging Handle are additional and are offered at discounted prices in the drop down menus.

    10.5" M4 Melonite Barrel 4140 Chrome Moly
    1 in 7" twist rate
    HPT/MPI
    5.56 NATO Chamber
    M4 Feed ramps
    Low Profile Micro Gas Block
    DGI Stainless Carbine-length gas tube
    Direct Gas Impingement
    Mil-spec A2 Flash Hider
Free Float 10" Handguard Quad Rail with T-Marks
    .750 barrel Handguard End Cap
Integral Picatinny Rail for Mounting Lights, Lasers, Bipods & Sights
Forged Upper Receiver with Forward Assist, Shell Deflector and T-Marks
    Made in Houston, Texas U.S.A.!

    Thx guys

Not much to say. If there aren't names attached to parts, it's tough to comment on the quality of the build. A link to the specific upper would help. If it's the one I found from a quick search, it looks like a Midwest Industries handguard. I've used a couple in the past but their cheap finish and use of jamb nuts to inhibit rotation have made me move to Troy Alpha/Bravo rails for budget builds. Basically the same price and a better rail in my opinion.

Price seems in line with other budget brands - talking >$400 with BCG and charging handle. Can't go too wrong there.

I assume you have a 16" gun already. Otherwise I'd highly advise that you build a carbine first. They're much more enjoyable to shoot and easier to make hits with compared to trying to shoulder a pistol.

Thanks for the quick response. The rest of the parts I have on the list:

    Bravo Co Bolt Carrier Group
Palmetto Striped Lower and Lower Parts Kit
Bravo Co Gun Fighter Charging Handle
    KAK SIG SB 15 package:
    Buffer tube/Arm Brace/Spring/Castle nut

Totals out to roughly $865 for everything including the upper

Sounds like a good lower setup. One thing I try to keep in mind is relative cost. $900 is a budget build for an AR, but it opens up a whole world of firearms. If you're buying a toy, are you sure you wouldn't rather have a 1911? Or an HK pistol? A tricker out 12 gauge and a case of shells? Any of the wonder nine pocket pistols? Sometimes I plan a project then I take a step back and think of what that $ could buy and end up going a different direction. Just something to think about.
