The smith and wesson sport isn't bad for 600. You don't need the forward assist. The bolt has scallops for that. You can push the bolt with your finger. The barrel is 1:9 melonite (better than chrome lined, and it's harder than chrome) most of the ammo you are shooting is going to be 55gr. 1:9 will do fine with it. If I didn't get my Daniel defense upper for cheap I would have built my own ar.

    http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/20...ger/-gun-review-smith-and-wesson-mp15-sport/

Or a psa premium or chf upper 299 or less with out bolt carrier group. On any lower you want.

My upper is Stag, though modified. I bought the regular standard upper (1:7 twist package) with the shitty plastic foreend and standard sight post etc.

I already had a low profile gas block and all of the other parts I wanted at home waiting for an upper. I bought the stag complete upper cause I didn't want to mess with headspace/timing. I wanted the reliability of having a built upper, but adding my own stuff to it. My whole rifle is pretty much a moshpit of parts put together, overall i spent LESS than a fully assembled middle grade AR would have cost.

    Upper:
    Stag arms

    Barrel:
    Stag Arms 1:7

    Foreend:
Yankee Hill Rifle length Free Float Rail

    Gas system:
BCM low profile gas block w/carbine length gas tube

    Muzzle Break:
    Yankee Hill Phantom Muzzle Brake

    Lower:
Aero Precision w/BCM Lower parts kit
    standard trigger
    Non-rotating pin setup

    Stock/grip:
    Mapgpul MOE

For a first AR, I was overwhelmed also (still am and trying to take it all in). I bought a stripped lower, parts kit, stock kit and a barreled upper and did the assembly myself. It was a great learning experience, didn't require any special tools and I got familiar with all of the parts and pieces that go into an AR and can now assemble one on my own without following a youtube video. For the price, I feel like I ended up with a great value. I shopped around and found quality parts at good prices and ended up with a complete rifle for a complete rifle for a little over $400. My current build I'm doing from scratch. I bought a stripped set and am purchasing all the parts and pieces as I find them. It's taking a little longer and will be more expensive when it's done but that's because I'm using higher end parts this time. I hope to be done with this one under $1,000 (excluding optics).

Yes lol, Thumped the steel a bit more than my .308. I'm looking forward to getting some 2 liters to shoot at.

I'm already getting fussed at by mom to not shoot trees lol. (my range is on parents property)

I did a water jug test on the TTSX bullet to see if indeed it would open up well at these velocities. It did just fine too. It stopped in the 5th jug. The first two water jugs reacted so violently when the bullet hit them they had enough energy to knock that 50-60# wet newspaper box sitting beside them clean off the table. Watch near the end of the video to see the box going off the other side of the table.

Yep that is a Quarter Dollar under that expanded bullet. And to think it is spinning too so reminds me of a small fan blade.

Handguard selection. That will determine if you need a mil spec barrel nut or if ones included.

Use a standard carbine weight and spring. Don't need heavy.

I have a friend who is building me an 11.5" ar pistol with the sig brace. I'll post some pics soon. Does anyone have experience with shooting these?

Only shot it twice now, but shoots nice. First AR as well, built the upper and lower. Anyways here's my pistol:

Get the KAK Sig brace buffer tube, it positions the "brace" better when shooting.

    Yes, it's loud.

Needs a noveske flaming pig or a gill brake to make it super obnoxious as hell. I've been next to an 8" barreled m16 while firing....it was just plain stupid lol
