The steel used in ammo is actually softer than brass. Wolf chronos faster than PMC Bronze last time I put them both over the chrono. I've shot 8 and 10" steel targets at 3Gun matches out to 300yards successfully (first round hits) with Wolf and Tula although Tula does chrono a couple hundred fps slower than Wolf. Just food for thought

Look, I like to shoot and shoot at least three times per month. I couldn't do that if I was buying brass ammo all the time due to the cost. Some say you wear out parts on your gun by shooting steel. I don't totally believe that but even if it's true..I could replace worn parts with the money I saved buying steel vs brass AND enjoying a lot more shooting than if I didn't. Just my opinion. Steel ammo runs without issue in my gun and hasn't caused any issues.

I have brass ammo stored and use it for hunting. But for the range and general fun, I'm shooting steel.

Lacquer coated steel case ammo from 10 or 15 years ago used to suck. I would pull big flakes of lacquer out of my chamber on my AK sometimes. The poly coated gray steel case that Wolf and others produce today is much nicer in my opinion, and doesn't seem to have the same issues. I reload and shoot a lot of brass, but I have a couple cases of steel put away for a rainy day.

Steel cased ammo is no longer lacquer coated. As stated above. The issue with steel cases ammo is the bi-metal bullet is harder than copper so it wears out the bore faster. That has been proven many times. However with that said the ammo is cheap enough you can rebarrel the rifle and still be ahead monetarily. So that's a good thing.

Sure some rifles can't run it because it'll rip the case head off or failure to extract etc. in my experience with every rifle I've had the ability to inspect and work on that does this has 1 of the following issues. The gun is overgassed (very common from reputable manufacturers for reliability reasons), chambers over polished (mirror finish chamber is bad), or the chamber is on the tight end of the spectrum.

Also fyi the 223 Wylde has all the external dimension and lead of a 5.56 nato chamber but the freebore of the 223 remington. Also it's a better chamber than both in my opinion hands down. All we use anymore with great success. Basically all of the reliability of 5.56 and the accuracy of 223.

The amount of money I save on wolf is 70 bucks per 1000 rounds so after about 3000-4000 rounds you've saved enough for a new barrel or more ammo.

My dad shoots the Hornady steel cased ammo, it has U.S. powder and bullet in a Russian primed steel case. It's sub MOA in his rifle. Pretty good for as cheap as it is. He also reloaded 20 rounds just to see. The neck stretched out pretty good after the second firing, so you could only reload them once, maybe twice before the neck splits, but in a pinch it could be done.

I don't know the material of the Hornady's. I was referring to the more common wolf and Tula. I only shoot the wolf because of how dirty the Tula shoots. Just more work cleaning and can foul the gun faster is all. Just a personal preference is all.

Sounds like ill be keeping steel in mind. Id like a wylde barrel eventually anyways.

So i know ive read multiple ideas on cleaning the ar (boresnake/lube for standard use and deep clean with barrel brush every 1000 or so?) And others break down and deep clean every use. everyone seems to have their own ideas which i know everyone will.

but what are most of you doing?

I clean and lube the BCG and chamber well after any range session (m-pro7 and your choice of lube). I only run a dry patch or two on a jag through the bore when I clean the BCG. I only clean the bore well (remove all copper) when accuracy begins to degrade or once a year. I do also believe in cleaning all the copper when I swap from say Hornady bullets to barnes and vice versa when hunting but that's just me being anal.

I've found it helps smooth out any machine chatter marks in the bore and thus helps with accuracy using this method on the bore.

So to ask the really stupid question, I can shoot 223 wylde in a 5.56 chamber, right?

Yes. Wydle is the chamber type not ammo type (its not a descriptor like 5.56 NATO)

Wylde is the better chamber than one chambered in 5.56 or .223. It outperforms both.

But i believe wydle is typically called .223 chamber. AR15Performance sells barrels

Thanks. I have a barrel chambered in 5.56 NATO already, just trying to figure out what it'll eat. I know I can shoot 223 rem, wasn't clear on wylde.
