Deal on my AR fell through. Buddy went into the shop 2 hours later to get mine and they had sold them all. Guess I'll wait for the next deal to come along. :annoyed:

Lower one no longer has scope. I added a railed gas block and now have iron sights.

Scope, red dot, irons? What are your plans for the rifle?

I went with illuminated scope with etched reticle, but don't fool with the illumination. I don't want to have to mess with batteries.

Forgive me if this question has been covered, you guys have 665 pages here haha. Want to get opinions on some longer range shooting. I am still learning here and have only been shooting for a couple years. I finished my current AR about 6 months ago and absolutely love it. One of the easiest guns I have ever shot.

My question is this, on an AR platform I want to be able to do some longer distance target shooting. I am back and forth about doing the AR10 vs AR15 platforms. I am hesitant to go AR10 because well, they are very pricey. So I am considering doing another AR15 platform for doing some distance shooting. What distance, well I don't really know as I am not trained yet. Probably more moderate distances, I plan on buying a bolt action dedicated riffle for hunting bigger game so this doesn't need to do that. It would be cool if the gun could work for deer and some pigs. What alternate calibers are you guys using? What should I be looking for?

    Here is my current setup!
    - Spikes upper, CMT lower. Spike battle trigger (I love that thing), Yankee Hill fold downs and quad rail, EoTech holographic. CHF 16" barrel, also Spikes.

Good thing about optics, you can always add them later down the road! You can definitely get high quality irons.

That is correct. Irons or iron sights. If there is an optic on the gun (scope or red dot) they may be referred to as BUS (back up sights)

Off the top of my head I would say: free float it, 18"-20" barrel,1:7 twist rate and using heavier bullet, thicker profile barrel like an HBAR cut, and quality trigger. I can't speak to any caliber besides 5.56.

Also, if someone has more experience with this topic and disagrees with this don't hesitate to correct me. I'm still learning too!

If your lower is considered a "multi caliber" what I would do to start out your longer range build is buy a 300 blackout upper and equip it with the longer barrel and higher power scope. If your lower IS multi caliber then the 2 uppers (your current carbine upper and your new 300 blackout upper) will just interchange, and as money permits you can build a new lower dedicated for the 300 blackout. Just my 2 cents worth anyway.

Let me look into the 300 blackout upper. Not schooled up on these. Good idea to be cheap about it though haha.

300 blackout isn't a long range round.... It's for small suppressed guns
