That would vary by department. When I was on ERT we were issued standard 55grain fmj. For my personal home defense ammo I use these; https://www.ammunitiondepot.com/1486-federal-223-rem-55-grain-sp.html. Currently 300 blackout seems to be the preferred round for home defense in an AR type rifle. I might build one next.

I do the same thing as Bagman, however I don't think any of my local LEO's know much about the stamps and those who do don't really give a crap, or if I told them I do have a tax stamp and a properly filled out form 1 they would not be likely to request to see it.

If I had time I would make a comprehensive post but I'm about to head to bed (work at 04:00).

In the simplest (most concise, excluding some facts) version, you print out a couple of Form 1's from the ATF website (if you build it you use a form 1, if you buy an SBR it's a form 4 and the dealer will help with the paperwork) fill them out, include a check for $200 and send the forms in.
Wait time is approximatly 4 months (which is stupid considering they run a standard background check on you, cash the check, and send paperwork back).

I'll try to find a good video (I think silencer shop had one on YouTube) to post tomorrow breaking it down further.

Personally once you go NFA (SBR/SBS/full auto/suppressors) you don't go back, between the usefulness, novelty, and time/money put in it's a big leap in, worse than TW.

I built my SBR (7" 556 AR) to keep behind the seat in my truck, it's discreet, very handy (I can maneuver it in the vehicle) and everything is common parts on it except the gas system and barrel (only because of length).

My first AR, a Delton Sport came with forward assist and dust cover for just over $600. That also included 4 mags (3 of them Pmags) and a Drago case. I didn't want one without all the parts one should have on it.

Most of my 5.56 is FMJ, but I've got a decent assortment of soft-point and v-max as well for if I ever need to hunt with it. I imagine it'd work well for social work too, if it ever came down to it. But, FMJ works just fine for that too, as long as you're hitting what you aim at. :notsure:

I haven't watched these videos but both of these channels know their stuff, bear in mind there are some changes coming into effect, so after you watch the videos read this.

Thanks you so much for this! Probably the single best website for beginner knowledge.

So after reading this and doing research, i think ive decided to build instead of get an off the shelf build. Couple questions though:

Do you guys prefer M-Loc, Keymod, or stick with a standard Picatinny handguard? The M-Loc is starting to grow on me.

14.5" barrel with permanent flash hider or 16" barrel? and if getting a 16", prefer Carbine or Mid Length gas? Why?

If you get a 16" barrel with mid length gas can you still get a 12" handguard if its free floating? Need clarification on that. I like the look of an 11" or 12" vs a shorter 9" which seems more common, but am looking at a mid length gas system.

Is 1:9 the way to go for just having a toy to target shoot with and of course put to use only if shtf for real?

Thanks in advance and please excuse my noob questions.

    That's a spiral fluted barrel.

Biggest advantage is less weight IMO, but it does look cool.

I'm not sure for fluted vs spiral fluted, it's likely just aesthetic.

IIRC also increased surface area on the barrel for increased cooling capabilities

UGH!, we were supposed to receive our White Oak Armament 22" barrel today, but UPS tracking says it's delayed due to a train derailment! Hope it's not in that big mess down in Texas! :notsure:

So, we received an email from White Oak Armament advising they were also notified about the shipment delay due to the accident. They then said that if there us no resolution next week, they are just going to send out a new barrel! !!.....

What?....not even their fault and they are going to take care of the customer like that!

They just bought a customer for life!!!

    :)

So I finally got around to putting the upper back together. I dropped it off this morning at Accurate Armory to have the comp pinned and welded. I will assemble the lower before I pick it up next Monday.
