For reference, the CMMG Anvil in 458 socom uses a stainless barrel.

Youll be fine. Just shoot it till its worn out. Which will be somewhere in the 6k-12k range depending on ammo used and stuff. Honestly for just a plinking gun it doesnt really matter on the barrel these days since with CNC and other computerized machinery getting an accurate barrel for cheap is pretty easy to do.

No big deal. Run the hell out of it. Even once it's worn out you won't see a big drop off in accuracy. If all you are doing is shooting a few hundred here and a few hundred there it will take years to notice a difference. If you're just shooting stuff in a pit you may never see a difference anyway.

Be glad to get my reloading stuff for .458. Just ordered some ammo just so I have a control to compare my reloads to. $84 for 40 rounds sucks.

Usually metal targets around 200-400 yards away and paper targets up close. So I'm glad to hear that

I have a Remington model 700 in 223. I know it's only a bolt gun but it's just a standard steel barrel and I've run 300 rounds through it in a day many times and had it so I can't touch the barrel and it's just as spot on as the day I bought it. One of my ar15s has at least 15k through it and I have not noticed any difference and my buddy has a 10.5 inch barrel with 30k plus and it runs circles around mine. In my opinion the numbers everyone throws around are for rapid automatic fire, and burst shooting, getting it really hot over and over again. I have looked into a couple SS barrels. Mainly because they are more accurate than Crome lined. When they do the crome lining there are imperfections from the manufacturing process than can affect accuracy. When I end up building my SPR I'm going with an 18 inch SS.

Alright guys. I am starting to save and build my AR, I am machining my lower myself with the help of a few people since i dont have all the tools. I have some ideas so far but this is my first build and Im curious what you think i should avoid as far as manufacturers goes. I know theres a lot and sub names but since you guys all have years on me im curious.

Melonite is probably the toughest, crome is second. For a heavy shooter, non precision barrel, I'd go with a Brownells or Midway USA house brand barrel.

Chrome's benefit is that its easier to clean, right?

Anyway, thinking about expediting my purchase of a house defense rifle, with a subsequent can.

Both of them are very hard (resists erosion and chamber wear) and corrosion resistant, so the chamber won't corrode and jam.

ETA: stainless steel gets you the second advantage, buy not the first.

I almost put one of those on mine. I really liked it but I have a freaking hard time seeing the small red dot so I went with something where I could change the reticle and make it easier to see haha

Shot the 458 socom some more today. Starting reloading for it. Shoots amazingly well. Little kick, but not horrible.
