What if the bear doesn't have a fence?

    You should probably do both.
    You know, for defense.

And i have both a 223 and the blackout. Its just the erk of spending 450$ for a barrel and just the brass when i can spend that same amount on another shotgun.

A 12 gauge is a much better defensive weapon than a 458 Socom against a big bear. An extra 800-1000ft/lbs of energy and 300 grains of projectile make a big difference.

Get both and carry both? A Mossberg 500/Rem. whatever it is (870?) can be had for sub 300 and will shoot 3" 12 gauge stuff just fine. Then have a 458 socom for backup/ the fun factor.

I have both and honestly if you told me i had ot have a bear specific gun I would pick my mossberg 500.

I don't find a shotgun that comfortable or convenient to carry for bear. I much preferred my 45-70 guide gun when I don't feel my ruger Blackhawk in 45 colt sufficient. I'd have no problem with using a 458 socom for bear protection with adequate bullets. I've seen what 300gr bullets at 1200fps will do and have no concern whatsoever about socom velocities. Quick target acquisition and accurate fire are more of a concern.

That comment is what i tell friends all the time. Carry what ever you can hit the target with constantly. Be it a 22lr or a 500S&W. Whatever puts shots on target is more important than caliber

Except when you're talking about legitimate self defense against large, dangerous animals. A 22lr will do you no good against a grizzly whether you shoot it well or not.

Phil Shoemaker recently proved that by killing a brown bear in self defense with a 9mm. Phil is an absolute professional when it comes to brown bears and probably knows more about them than most will ever come close to. Now, I don't think the 9mm is adequate just because he was successful with it, but it certainly proves that being armed and keeping your head are extremely important in a bear encounter.

Also, the 500S&W is not a great self defense round. Awesome hunting round, but sucks for self defense. It's almost impossible for anyone to have a quick follow on shot from any revolver chambered in it. I have no need for any self defense load that shoots faster than 1200fps from a handgun. You've got to be able to accurately shoot more than once.

Ok, I can accept that. my AR has Timny single stage, and it scary sensitive but stable.

I myself have heard and read very mixed reviews on aftermarket piston systems to the point I decided to never get one, just my input.

I had a Adams piston kit and it was a picky thing to get set but once set it worked great......
