Not sure if posted here yet. But

www.classicfirearms.com has 20% off all of their barrels right now. Just bought 2 16" 1:9 twist stainless diamond fluted barrels for 87 each. No free shipping, but you can get some really good deals right now

Thats really low, like too low. Have you used their barrels before?
Do they have any 14.5" barrels?

EDIT: Jesus Christ, i understand now those that have said an AR is more expensive than a crack addiction.

I have MANY of their barrels. No complaints from me. A lot of their barrels are chambered in .223 WYLDE, which "supposedly" grants better accuracy, it is a tighter chamber, but unlike being chambered in .223 which won't allow you to shoot 5.56, you can shoot both rounds in a WYLDE chamber

The Noveske barrel is 5.56 iirc. The case of ammo im picking up is .233. Should be good?

Also its a 1:9 barrel, ive read its supposed to be matched for 62gr rounds. The ammo im buying, plus most of the cheaper ammo ive seen is 55gr. What effect would this have in real life?

    223 in 5.56 - ok

5.56 in 223 - 99% fine but not the best practice.

1:9 - best with 62gr or less, 55gr is optimal

    1:7 - best with heavier than 62gr.

Yes, a 5.56 chamber will shoot both rounds. (5.56 is loaded hotter than conventional .223)
Same brass, same length, same bullets.

Twist rate varies too much to just give a simple answer, you have to account for your barrel length and distance you'll be shooting. 1:7-:9 you'll be fine with 55 or 62 grain

The cheaper stuff like PMC, Perfecta, and Wolf Gold are 55gr. Whats the real world difference if im firing 55gr out of my 1:7? Just less less ability to keep tighter grouping compared to a 62gr bullet? After what yardage does it really become evident? Past 50yds, 100yds?

I imagine it would be wise get at least a box or two of good 62gr when it comes to zeroing my sights?

EDIT: my barrel is 14.5" + muzzle break

I have had 1:7 16" barrels do fine with 55 grain out to 150 before. I have had another 16" 1:7 that was very inaccurate at 150. It honestly depends on your barrel.

I reload, so I am able to tighten my groups by changing loads. But I still buy Perfecta and every now and then some Wolf (brass). I won't buy 62 grain bullets because they're usually quite a bit more expensive so those I reload. But as far as 55 grain, I buy and shoot whatever is the cheapest.

If you are looking for strictly accuracy, take your gun out and shoot some groups with different ammo, brands and weight. See what works best for your rifle

With a lighter grain bullet you will want the bullet to twist more inside your barrel, this is what creates your accuracy. But too much will throw it off, too little the same. Once you start getting keyholes in your target, you're pushing that grain bullet in that barrel to its limit. A heavier bullet doesn't require AS MUCH twist to stabilize in the barrels because it is heavier.

This is what has worked for me and what I have noticed. Again, I have built many rifles and pistols, and bought complete rifles as well. Best way of you to know your rifle, is sling a bunch lead at some targets

Sweet. All done with a drill press? What do you do about the 'fire' and 'safe' markings? Just leave them off? Ive thought it would be cool if someone made a HK style stamp for those.

    Ever tried anodizing at home?

It's actually the reverse. Heavier (longer) bullets require faster twist to stabilize. 1:7 imparts more spin on a bullet than 1:9. It's one full 360 degree revolution in 7 inches instead of 9. Bolt guns in 223 are often even slower twist - 1:12 is pretty common. One spin in 12 inches, slower twist, is great for 40 & 50 gr bullets like you would use on prairie dogs.

I think I am going to build a new upper. Was thinking of either 6.8 SPC II or 6.5 Grendel. I want to do a sbr build on these but does anyone know what a good barrel length is for those?

Don't know much about the Grendel other than I usually see it run with 20" barrels. The 6.8 is good to go down to 12.5" reliability and ballistics wise.

Nice, so with the 6.8 SPC what do you thinking plinking distance would be? I would also need a 6.8 BCG right? Do I need a specific charging handle for it too?

Looking at it from a purely ballistics standpoint I would be comfortable using a 6.8 chambered 12.5" barrel for hunting deer out to 400 yards with the right load. Plinking will depend on how accurate your rifle is capable of being with your ammo.
This chart is for either an 18" or 16" barrel, Remington core lokt ammo which is known to be light for the SPC 2 chamber. From my research with Silver State Armory (SSA) ammo people push 2700-2800 FPS out of a 12.5" with a 90 Gr. projectile.
    IMG_5798.jpg

Correct, the bolt is different on the 6.8, the bolt carrier is mil-spec (5.56) though, so if you want to just experiment with the cartridge you can get a 6.8 bolt to drop into the 5.56 bolt carrier.
Charging handle is mil-spec, mags are not, I use PRI 6.8 mags and have not had a mag related failure from either the 25 round or 15 round versions.

Sighted in, sot a 100 yard group, then took it to 300, 500, 700, and 800.
    Minimal wind but heavy mirage.
This photo is rounds 30 thru 40 out of this rifle. 9 hits, one miss.
100 yard group wasn't spectacular. Should only get better once it has more rounds through it.

Its about $.28 a round so its pretty good. I dont know much about Norinco other than its old Chinese ammo. May wanna look into it before buying.
