We'll be happy to toss out 10 or 20 recommendations every month or so if it will help the decision making process.

what up TW AR BSr's, I have a build question hoping you can help me with.

I helping a friend install a new magpul hand guard on his an AR15. The problem is the Magpul is designed for the old school iron sight / gas combo block and he is running a low profile gas block.

The vendor also sold him this hand guard plate that is supposed to install between the gas block and barrel key. My concern is that adding this plate will off-set the gas ports between the gas block and barrel. I cannot confirm this offset for sure, but by looking at AR blue prints, this could be the case.

My question is, does anyone have experience with this type of plate? If so, did it have any negative effects?

    Here is the plate

    Thanks,

Gas blocks are designed exactly for this gap. snugging the handguard cap up to the shoulder of the barrel then sliding on the gas block should position the block perfectly.

Need some opinions on what I should do? So I test fit my YHM Mod 2 billet upper finally with my Diamondhead VRS-X 8.5in FF handguard. Of course I'm running into more problems now... The tabs that protrude from the handguard that hold the handguard straight and center with the upper are too small... Well, actually, my upper is too big because the tabs are made for the mil spec upper profile. Should I have the tabs machined to the size of the upper or should I have the upper machined at the points where the tabs hit. I'm thinking machining the upper is going to be better because I'm guessing I can find the actual measurement of a mil spec upper and make a guide using the measurements. Thanks

Wouldn't it better to mill the handguard, so milspec handguards fit correctly if you decide to switch down the road?

So 300 Blk Out guys, what Magazines do you use? I have heard from several that MagPul PMag's (At least the old version) caused all kinds of feed issues.

I use NHMTG for both 300BLK and 5.56, never had anything resembling a problem. I just can't warm up to plastic AR mags.

I never had a lick of trouble from my gen 2 mags. I use a mix of magpul gen 2's, troy battle mags, milspec 20s and 30s, and steel HK mags. No issues from any of them ever.

Got her pretty well dialed in for my tactical home defense weapon. Green Laser on left side as well that you can't see. With a mag full of hollow point 5.56 rounds

I've always shot better with the M16 over the M4. It feels more comfortable to me.

Thanks for the reply, just got to these. The only thing I would be milling is the extruding pins that hold the handguard straight in line with the upper. If I decide to switch to a standard clamshell/d-ring deal, I wont have any problems if I machine the upper itself. The only machining in the upper I would do is where the pins touch, I would have small indents machined into the upper that allow it to slide completely on.
Yep, thanks. If I have the indentations done nothing on the bottom of the handguard interferes with the lower part of the upper receiver or pin. The only reason I'm sticking with this handguard is my SBR barrel length is 8.5 and I would like to keep it as tucked away as possible. I looked at 9in handguards but they are just too long. The other thing is I'm using a Hera Arms CQR foregrip and the foregrip slides snug right up against where I would grab if I was shooting using the mag well grip area, that's why I can't use a clamp style handguard like most are. Anyone have links to milspec sizing for an upper receiver, need to know the profile size so I can have it machined properly. I don't want to take too much out because then the handguard will twist.

Gen 3 pmags are best, Gen 2 sometimes snags depending on if you're running subs vs supers. Gen 3 40 rounders are suppose to be amazing, bought two. Amend 2 mags have been tested and work well with 300AAC, and of course the trusty GI mags work well. Has anyone used a d-60 rd drums yet with 300blk or Surefire 60's or 100's? I feel sorry for Cali guys having to see us talk about all this fun stuff :p

Sure is. The version chambered for 5.56 is cheaper tho but then you still only get 20 round mags
