That's about the right price for an entry-level AR. My personal advice in the build vs. buy argument is always to build. Most people will want to change/upgrade or otherwise personalize their firearms to their liking. By the time you add up what you'd spend on buying a complete rifle then parts-swapping, you just nickel-and-dimed yourself over the $1k range for what still amounts to a $600 rifle. On the other hand if you don't think you'll be changing anything soon or are hesitant to build something that goes bang, by all means buy the Sport. Good rifle for the price point.

I'll be honest and tell you that my first rifle was a completely built purchase. I started modding it and buying all kinds of shit because it looked cool, but once I got more familiar with the platform, I dialed it back and got rid of the excess parts.
The first trip out to the range with the first rifle I built was an emotional rollercoaster. Scared shitless that I'd surely fucked something up and I was going to explode CA into the ocean, even flinched when I fired the first shot (being honest here). After the first mag dump and several thousand rounds later with zero failures you couldn't wipe the stupid grin off my face because I was firing something I built with my own hands and tools that worked flawlessly.

Side note: In CA, I'm a fan of 80% lowers for the complete DIY experience, but only if you plan on building several or go in with friends (and split the cost of the jig and tooling). The investment is pretty hefty if you're only going to build one rifle and honestly not worth it.

This is exactly what I just purchased as my first AR and As you mentioned, I’ve seen good reviews, plus some buddies recommended it. I pick it up Monday, so I’m excited for that and we’ll see if I fall down yet another rabbit hole and start spending money on this new hobby.

I just go the M&P15 Lower receiver I plan on doing my own build. I will source the parts slowly and when I find good deals , so it will take me some time to finish it.

Basically. If you’re patient and dont mind waiting on sales then I’d say take your time. Find 3 of every component and do research to see which ones will be best for you. Then look for sales on those three items and buy whichever one you decide on.

Not up to date on my Cali gun laws for obvious reasons.

But could you just buy multiple lowers now and get the rest later?

A lift, some wheels, some tires, some performance, some cosmetic and then audio.
Any semi automatic rifle with a detachable magazine, pistol grip purchased after January 1, 2017 has to be featureless or mag lock = CA compliant. Purchases after 1/1/17 cannot be registered as RAW. From now until the law changes, you can buy all the lowers want but once its fully assembled it has to be featureless or a mag locked.

I’m okay with it being featureless. Kinda forced to be okay with at least
