It was like that for me a couple weeks ago as well. Give it a while to get all the stock back.

Can someone school me on ar10s? I just need a quick dummies guide to choosing parts and building vs buying

Are parts companies basically the same with ar15s as far as brand x is good brand y is crap? What are good prices/good brands for complete rifles?

Minus glass, what should I budget and I'm assuming barrels and triggers are the must have quality parts?

Is building one as easy as an ar15?

I'm intimately familiar with the 15s but today was my first day behind a 10 and it's now a must have and all I shot was a dpms g2 I think with nothing done

I will make sure I say first and foremost, no! AR 10 are not as easy to marry different manufacturers together as A.R. 15‘s are. (Not exactly plug-and-play per say). As most manufacturers will tell you. You are safer to marry their uppers with their lowers, individual internal parts included. You can mix and match ar10 parts from different manufacturers but they are very specific and not all will work, you can either do it by trial and error or find AR 10 dedicated websites that will give you a heads up which manufactures mate with which manufactures and ones to stay away from. As far as barrels and triggers, yes both being equally as important, and can be greatly improved and you shouldn’t have any problems with aftermarket applications.

So realistically I'd be better off for my first one to buy a basic model prebuilt and then upgrade parts as needed

Yes, I would highly suggest (and I break these items apart because it will save you about $100). Go to Palmetto arms by the A.R. 10 upper and then choose your lower and you can build one for about $570 out the door. If you buy the completed AR 10 from them it will cost about $100 more. In other words you’re paying them $100 to push the two pins in that holds them together. LOL

The one thing I will add is make sure they’re both Gen2, meaning your upper is a GEN2 and your lower is a GEN2, because they do not mate with Gen1 even from the same manufacture (even though I don’t think they sell Gen1’s anymore anyway). But I would hold off on Palmetto arms for now because with this latest scare everybody has emptied their shelves

That is definitely a little bit of a red flag, but the guys on here do talk highly of PSA

The standard brand-name quality hierarchy is still there and translates to the AR10 platform as it is in AR15. Like @smugly said, fitment between brands gets a little janky for the bigger components (receivers for the most part, but I would probably stay within brand for barrels as well. Some manufacturers offer matched receiver sets which might be worth looking into but even buying from the same manufacturer should get you to acceptable specs. Building them is the same as AR15s assembly-wise with a couple minor location changes for detents that should be obvious once you look at it. You'll need new vise blocks and such since AR15 blocks won't fit the different geometry so keep that in mind. I actually like my AR10 trigger to be somewhat stock- it's a heavier rifle with heavier recoil and I wanted everything to feel "sturdy". I have an Aero enhanced trigger on one and an Anderson NiB trigger group on another. I have seem some guys run light weight triggers, but not many.
Built my "nice" AR10 (long range) for about $1200-1500 (I haven't really done the math because I'm stimulating the economy like a true 'Merican) and my beater AR10 for well under a grand.
Another thing to consider for AR10s is that they tend to be a little pickier on ammo vs AR15s. Some ammo manufacturers will use longer projectiles which makes the entire round ever so slightly longer and causes feeding issues in semi-auto which is not a problem for bolt-actions. My rifles like Fiocchi and Winchester, but hated ArmsCore. Haven't tried many other brands of ammo, but I've been meaning to. Word on the street is that steel ammo is a hard no-go, but that's just what I heard, and has not been tested yet.

Try the Alumahyde, Scott! I used it on my AR9 and it came out amazing! Even painted one of my 15s FDE as well. Holds up great!
