Finally picked up my first AR! Had a few items I could swap over from a 10/22 build and added a magpul handguard. Excited to get it out on the range.

Finally received and installed the Magpul FDE M-Lok bi-pod. Seems to be good quality - very little fore/aft play for loading, seems very stable and durable. Need to get it on the range to fully test it.

For low magnification Primary arms has 1-6 scopes with illuminated reticle for $250-300, not including mount.
For red dot go with Holosun (for battery life) or Vortex (for warranty).
I really like my Holosun HS403C, it stays on my 12.5” SBR, and I’m going to get either a vortex or primary arms 1-6 or 1-8 scope to replace the 3-9 scope on my 12.5” 6.8 upper.

    I also just bought a Holosun 507C for my M&P 40.

I’ve got the vortex 1-6 on my AR-10 that I lost in a boating accident. I like it a lot. I mean liked.

Posting this in the thread since I just noticed this thread today.
    My build has:
    -Daniel Defense V7 upper
    -Aero precision lower
    -James Madison Tactical trigger
    -Holo sun Red Dot
    -SB Tactical SBA3 brace

I love the "pistol" and have shot around 10,00 rounds through it and haven't had a malfunction. The holo sun rocks and the trigger is such a great trigger that I would highly suggest this trigger. The only thing that I don't like is how hot it gets after 2 mags. I was thinking about possibly getting a short stroke piston upper because I have heard that they don't get as hot as Direct impingement, if anyone has a piston pistol and has any feedback I would love to hear it!

    It looks great.

My one question is about the vertical forward grip. My understanding is that adding a vertical grip to a pistol changes the classification to an AOW (Any Other Weapon) which requires an ATF Tax Stamp. Have you registered it? I may behind on law changes - the most recent ATF letter I've seen on this subject (2006) makes it clear: ATF has long held that by installing a vertical fore grip on a handgun, the handgun is no longer designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand. Therefore, if individuals install a vertical fore grip on a handgun, they are “making” a firearm requiring registration with ATF’s NFA Branch. Making an unregistered “AOW” is punishable by a fine and 10 years’ imprisonment. Additionally, possession of an unregistered “AOW” is also punishable by fine and 10 years’ imprisonment. Anyone else have more recent info?

I did find a more recent update - as long as the overall length exceeds 26", it's OK.

If the overall length of the weapon is 26" it is classified as a firearm.

Looking at 11.5" uppers, what brand?

Any recommendations on 223 hunting ammo? Tried the Hornady American Whitetail 60 gr and my gun did not like it. 4" group at 100 yards. 16" barrel with 1:7 twist. I was thinking either 62 gr federal fusion or 64 gr Winchester Powerpoint.

Gun shoots about 1.25" with 55 gr FMJ just for reference.

In case anyone is interested, apparently the efile form 1 is only taking around 10 days to process for those SBR’s.
