I guess no matter how good a system is, someone will always try and "improve" it.

Im sure poor maintenance and non quality parts results in most peoples problems. Get a well known manufac, keep it clean and you should be good to go.

Nice to see some actual first hand experience about this. I'd bet most people who comment on this, all over the internet - not just this site, have no real input. They just read something somewhere else online and repeat it. While I never went to combat I have shot countless rounds through a normal M16 and I cant ever recall a malfunction.

I think you need to reread my post :) I love my AR but take down for it was not so easy for me when i first field stripped it. I'm not trained for it. The AK on the other hand was very straight forward for my first field strip.

    thank you for clarifying:)

I got to disagree with you, its crazy easy. Just slide out one pin and it will open like a old shotgun, then pull the bolt carrier group and charging handle out and your done. Clean, lube, lube, assemble, lube, and your done.

If you are still wanting an ak, I would go for a saiga in your round of choice. They come in .223, 5.45, 7.62. Look @ classic arms dot com they have both the non converted and the converted.
I for one am not a fan of the AR, from the sounds of things, one of the few on this board if not the only one. I will never say 1 bad word about the AR because it is a great gun, just not my cup of tea. And for the guy who said its great from shooting from the hip, I can get 2moa @100yds on irons with my saiga 7.62 and the same with my 5.45.

As i knew you would :) As i said before i am not trained to field strip an AR. For a newb, I myself was able to use and field strip the AK in a more efficient matter than the AR. Dont get me wrong, the AR is simple but to my untrained hands it was a nightmare lol

Can't say much about AKs except for remembering my buddy's cheap Chinese piece-o-crap jamming years ago. Also, when he was teaching his hot Brazilian girlfriend how to shoot but didn't warn about recoil. She took one shot then sweapt the rest of us as she wheeled around with her finger still on the trigger... We all dove and he tackled her. Luckily she didn't get off any unexpected shots. I'm FAR from any kind of an AR expert, but I went and built one recently. I suppose when you do it that way, field stripping is just a given. I built it on a stripped Spike's lower, F/A Spikes BCG, LMT upper, DD LPK, BCM Charging handle, and Misc Magpul stuff. I also finally got around to taking some pics:

Here's mine... I plan on doing a DIY diamond camo job on it in the next few months.

Minus the eotech, don't have it anymore.

100 yards is easy for either weapon. Once you get past 300 is when the ak will fail and the ar platform will continue to shine all the way to 800m

The AR CMMG .22 LR conversion = awesome Coon hunting weapon but a bit heavy to carry around in the woods in the middle of the night

I just built a 300 BLK bolt gun. Currently working up loads, but N110 is hard to find around these parts.

This is a known fact, the AK was not built for anything past 300 yards, as most battles are not fought out past 300 yards. The inaccuracy of the AK that you hear about under 300 yards is more the shooter than the rifle or the round.

As a killer of men, a shit ton of battles happen past 300 meters. In fact on the rare occasion that you get caught closer than 300 meters you better have your running shoes on.

As a killer of paper and hogs, all of my battles don't usually stretch out past 100meters. If i need to reach out and touch someone I will use my mosin nagant.
p.s. thanks for your service to our great nation.

    Good advice about any gun.

Also thanks for keeping the conversation friendly and civil guys. I appreciate people not giving me crap for liking my wimpy 5.56 or owning a commie gun.

Key words for the AR: "Properly used..." and "...coat it in lube." The AR is built with much tighter tolerances and is, therefore, is much more maintenance intensive and must be cared for to function.

The AK is built with much larger tolerances in its manufacture which allows it to continue to function when it is used "improperly" and provided with mud for lubricant.

    YMMV

True, but only to a certain point. EVERY gun and EVERY weapons system needs to be taken care of to some degree. NOTHING is "Bullet proof", no pun intended. Case in point:
