The best bet is to stick with what you like and are familiar with. The AR platform has been proven but fails when it is not maintained or in an ideal environment. AK's as others have said are just not practical when it comes to the accuracy department. So why not take the best of both world and go for a hybrid; the piston driven AR platform. There a couple of cons which is increased weight and front heavy. I recommend buying a platform build around the piston such as the Robinson Arms XCR or POF, BM ACR which does not suffer from the ill affects of carrier's tilt from AR piston drop ins. Good luck! :)

I love my Romanian WASR. Ive had it for 5 years....put thousands of rounds through it and it has great "practical combat accuracy" or I can hit a man sized target at 200 yards with open sights. Although Fienoma is correct, there are good Romanians to be had and they are really inexpensive. Google "selecting a WASR" to get some tips on what to look for. The round is a larger, harder hitting round than the 5.56 and I like that.

My simple answer to the age old debate. Own both and reach for the FAL.

Get an AR that is piston driven for the reliability of the AK but chambered in the delicious 7.62x39. Then for fun you can get an FAL too:

Now you can see why I don't have my bumper, winch, and lift kit yet. Too many hobbies. My personal favorite (the guy who said reach for an FAL was right in my opinion):

FALs are almost all 308, yes? Can looks like an AAC 762SD. I have one pending ATF approval. Cope - would you consider this setup hearing-safe?

It is the 762SD. If you are using longer barrels like 16 and up I think it is hearing safe, but I would say you should still wear earplugs. It sounds like a .22LR from a Marlin Model 60 or something. Yes, the FALs are .308.

The rifle above the FAL is a registered short barreled rifle. It has a 7" barrel chambered in 7.62x39. It is long stroke piston driven by Primary Weapons system. They call this upper receiver the Diablo. http://primaryweapons.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=190&idcategory=11 I did add a POF roller cam to the bolt assembly. I have replaced their muzzle device with an AAC 51T adapter for a can. The lower receiver is Spikes tactical. The grip and butt stock are from Troy industries. The trigger is the nickel boron coated one from Spikes. The scope is a 1.5x mini-ACOG from Trijicon. This rifle is extremely accurate and puts 3 rounds of Wolf 7.62x39 steel cased into a quarter at 100 yards. I have witnesses to prove this. It is also extraordinarily reliable. It is one of my favorite weapons. I originally built it in order to have a light weight compact hard hitting rifle to take with me deer hunting since my back got messed up in the Marines. It is easy to get in and out of a stand and it has quite a bit of punch for its size. It is also rather quite when shot suppressed. I have come to appreciate this little fellow more than most of my other rifles, but not more than my POF308. I hope I have answered your questions. Let me know if you have any more.

I dont think theyre exactly the same. Similar to 5.56 and.223, pretty similar rounds but slightly different. You can put .223 through a 5.56 barrel but shouldnt put 5.56 through a .223 barrel.

7.62x51mm is fine in a .308 chambered rifle; .308, however, may not be fine in a 7.62x51mm rifle. I don't own either but that's how I understand it.

It's actually the other way around. .308 is fine in a rifle chambered in 7.62x51mm. You will find people who will tell you this is not so, however, it is my understanding that the bullets are seated a little deeper in the .308s, so the 7.62x51s may not extract properly from a .308 chamber. It is my understanding that this was done so that the military could use civilian ammunition but not the other way around. The same is true of .223 and 5.56. You can use anything in a rifle chambered for .556, but you should only use .223 Remington in a rifle chambered for .223. If you try the military cartridge, it may work, but you may get jams and extraction issues. Today, many manufacturers of tactical rifles chamber them in the military caliber, but label them with the civilian caliber designation as a PR tactic to avoid being accused of selling military rifles to the public. Therefore you will see weapons that say they are .308 but if you ask the manufacturer, it is rated to handle 7.62x51, etc.

The barrel length on the green FAL is 18 inches. The length on the black FAL with the folded stock is 11 inches.

I feel that if you have the money to spend and want to spend it most, you would get the most all around utility, durability, reliability, accuracy, and portability from one of these: http://www.pof-usa.com/p308/P308-14-MRR-H.htm

Yes, you lose a bit of knock down power by going with a shorter barrel, in my opinion, unless you are planning to regularly shoot past 600 yards, you will be more than served by this rifle's compact size. I owned the 20" at one time and sold it as it was quite unwieldy. Here is a picture of the 14.5" 7.62 beside its 16" 5.56mm brother...the knock down power of a short barreled 7.62 dwarfs that of a full sized 5.56. Get yourself a real battle rifle. 5.56 is a high powered varmint round:

Cool. I hope my SBR is close to hearing safe. I'm afraid that when I get my can the 5.56 will be so loud that I have to build another upper for 300 BLK subsonic. :D

everything depends on the brands you choose and quality you want.

    AR's run roughly $1000
