Absolutely. I just had previously assumed that rifle = most penetration. I didn't think through pistol can = heavier bullet, more penetration, certain rounds of .223 don't actually penetrate much at all while still being lethal, etc etc etc...

I read up on someone who did a ton of drywall and ballistics gel testing of all sorts of different rounds and recommended particular mfr's and rounds for pistols, rifles, and shotguns for home defense. It wasn't box o' truth, somebody else did it. Where it was now escapes me, but I was impressed at some of the .223 they tested penetrating gel very well and losing lethality quickly after hitting drywall. (Not to say it didn't go through the drywall, but that it tumbled and lost lethality within short order.)

Nope, wait. The time after a bill introduced in congress but before the bill takes effect is the time to buy sell. If that happens, a $600 AR15 will be worth $1500 for a few months as people shuffle while they can.

ETA - meant sell, not buy, obviously...

Whoa... That is surprising, the one near me even took the AR-looking BB and airsoft guns off the shelf.

...just because you don't carry one "daily" doesn't mean it's not constitutionally protected... long guns are >>> than handguns when the SHTF, ...and the 2A never was about hunting....

    Modular.

With one lower receiver assembly, I can swap in a barrel/upper assembly that can run multiple calibers, including 9mm, .45, 6.8mm, and even a 50 cal that was designed specifically for the platform.
For cheap fun in the desert, I can swap in another barrel and upper assembly that is dedicated to .22lr.

The rail mounting system allows for a wide variety of optics, lighting, bipod/monopod options, and the magazine capacity is defined by the magazine, not the rifle.
Where a dedicated hunting rifle might be limited to 4-6 rounds (generally regulated by hunting regulations, over 5-10 rounds is "unsporting"), the AR platform can use anything from a lightweight 10-round "hunting" magazine to a 100 round Beta-C drum.

The tradeoff? It's a semi-automatic. Accuracy suffers compared to a bolt action rifle, and since the action is not cycled manually, they are less tolerant of dirt.

ballistics can be very surprising... .223 travels very fast, but it is a small lightweight bullet, ....when it hits intermediate barriers it can "upset" prematurely, i.e. yaw sideways, and could end up breaking into pieces... i've read where this has been documented by folks doing tests w/ .223 FMJ (tom gresham's "guns and gear" show, etc.), ...slower but heavier bullets tend to stay "intact" and enable them to penetrate certain intermediate barriers better... yet, the faster rifle rounds generally tend to do much better at penetrating certain hard barriers, like steel plate, etc...

It depends on what your state does.

The Federal ban of 1994 simply required manufacturers to stop selling "defined AWs" to civilians. One really stupid thing was the bayonet lug made a rifle an AW.
An SKS with a folding bayonet was legal.
An AK47 with a detachable bayonet was banned.
No other difference between the two. The SKS and AK fire the same cartridge, can both accept a 30rd "banana" mag or a 100rd drum.

    California required registration.

You mean the "Walmart parking lot loophole"?

    Ya...

Nothing is legal at a gun show that isn't legal anywhere else.
I know you know this... I'm putting this out there because it needs to be said.

    Federal law:
Gun sales by a dealer require the completion of form 4473 and a background check.
Gun sales by private parties between residents of the same state are cash-and-carry.
Gun sales involving residents of different states must utilize an FFL for the transfer, background check required.

You can not legally drive from to a gun show in a different state and purchase a gun without having it shipped to a gun shop in your state.

One exception is for those who hold an 03FFL, Federal Firearms Licensed collector of Curio & Relics. I have such a license.
I can travel to any state and purchase any handgun or rifle (that does not violate California's AW ban) and bring it home with me. California law, I must declare and register a handgun within 10 days of returning home.
I must also inventory all purchases into my bound book.

The "gun show loophole" is the simple fact that in states that follow Federal law for private party sales, you can go to a gun show and purchase a gun from another private party without any paperwork or a background check.
You can also make contact with someone on Craigslist or Tacomaworld and meet them in a parking lot somewhere and 100% legally do exactly the same thing.

Some states, like California, have more restrictive laws and do not allow "cash and carry" person to person transfers without going through a gun shop.

One vaporous "argument" that we keep hearing is "Nobody needs ______ for ______"

So that makes an excuse for banning them?

Nobody needs a car that can travel over 100mph.
Nobody needs a 4,000 square foot home.
Nobody needs a backyard swimming pool.

Okay... nobody needs them, let's ban them.

The numbers are on a decline, but according to the 2010 census, automobiles (okay, their drivers) killed over 44,000 people in 1995, 43,000 people in 2005, and almost 34,000 in 2009.... total of 199,000 people in 5 years.

3300 people every month from 2005 to 2009 inclusive.
