Great info here. Lots of folks think the "loop hole" is that you just go to a gun show and buy machine guns and everythign else with no paperwork...

however, you can buy long guns from neighboring states if going through an FFL. no handguns or no "face to face" sales though.

Rich, I think the most important point you made there is people are generally uneducated when it comes to firearms and gun control in general.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
I would agree. I keep hearing about reinstating the AWB from the Clinton Era. I bought my AR during that ban. As stated previously, the only difference between it and an Pre/Post ban rifle is it does not have a bayonet lug or flash suppressor.

They're pretty much mainstream...to the 45% of Americans who own guns. People who go to ranges, read a gun magazine, use a gun forum, they might be used to AR's and military-style rifles, but there are 55% of Americans who don't own guns, and don't understand why people insist on owning an AR-15 when you can own other weapons for hunting and self-defense.

This is why this issue is intractable, as intractable as say, abortion. There is a fundamental lack of understanding from both sides on why the other side believes what it does. There is also an unwilling to give ground on either side. The prevailing theme so far has been, if there is one iota of gun control, be it banning certain high cap magazines or making background checks mandatory for all gun purchases, this will only lead to more gun control and in the end, I'll be forced to give up all my guns.

Just remember, the people calling for gun control are not necessarily bad people trying to rob you of your rights. They see a problem and want to offer a solution; misinformed maybe, but not inherently bad or evil people. Just like gun owners are not all crazy right-wing goons who want every person in America to carry a gun at all times. When looking at some of the statements people make, remember, they are saddened by what they see and they think they have a solution. Civility would be nice in this discourse, from both sides.

That one word I bolded is the reason I get upset about hearing people talk about gun control. If you are informed, and have a different opinion, so be it, I can at least respect it. Uninformed people with strong opinions irritate the hell out of me. If you feel strongly enough about an issue to open your mouth, at least take the time to get familiar with the issue first and that goes for all arguments, not just gun control. If people are informed, it leads to better discussions and more effective outcomes.

Very true, and this is one that cuts both ways. Talking to someone at the range yesterday, I got to hear how Sandy Hook was a government conspiracy where they killed a bunch of children to galvanize support for gun control. Or how the new assault weapons ban will have provisions to confiscate existing weapons.

There are as many legitimate reasons for not having guns as there are for having them. And in times like these, I'm struck by how corporations will galvanize on people's fears to profit, be it in increased sales of guns, ammunition, or bulletproof backpacks. If an AWB does go into effect, it may hurt the individual's right to own a gun, but we would be remiss to think it would hurt a company's right to sell them

Excellent Article. Thanks! I am forwarding it to everyone I know on both sides of the debate!

Also had a good comment pointing to this article, a ccw holder with properly learned gun habits in a mall shooting!

More guns don't mean more violence.

First off "AR" does not mean "Assault Rifle". It stands for "Armalite Rifle" model 15. But the state run anti-gun media would try to have everyone believe that 100 rounds is an arsenal and not just 15 minutes target shooting at the range with several mags. And the "items" that make a rifle an "Assault Rifle" are asinine choices made by fools.

We are victims of 40 years of our public school systems where more and more teachers do not educate, they indoctrinate. It has been a systematic pussyfication of America where kids are afraid to even draw a gun much less own and fire one. Piece by piece they are dismantling the Second Amendment, an unarmed country is one easy to control. For right or wrong.

When I was young there were shooting clubs in schools where you would bring your .22 rifle and after school have competitions. It was normal to see shotguns in a truck's easy rider rifle rack because the kids planned on legally hunting after school. Now if a child even talks about hunting they are suspect and can be reported to the school officials for further investigation. Isn't it funny that back when people used firearms more there was less mass gun violence. Our Fore Fathers had just won our freedom from an oppressive government and they wrote the Second Amendment to ensure that NEVER happened again. Read their words and it is clear that their intent was to prevent tyranny against the people.

But not all people are qualified for the responsibility of gun ownership. I would have no problem if they required a more stringent training class to own a firearm. Something more akin to professional situational shooting courses. This would give people who's parent or mentor did not provide adequate firearm training a way to learn to handle, be comfortable with, and safely competent with that firearm. A mentally challenged person could possibly be identified during this in depth training to prevent such people from possessing a firearm. In Germany you have to go to a professional driving school before you can get a driver's license. Because they know that once you are in your vehicle you can go to the Autoban and drive at unlimited speeds. Gun ownership has responsibilities that we should never take lightly. But when you look at the huge number of people in America that own and safely handle firearms compared to the miniscule number that do such monstrous things such as in Connecticut, it is a testament to just how serious we gun owners take our responsibility.

Unsure what is gonna happen i went out and bought another AR-15, ive got two now and ones modded pretty good and the new ones a basic bushmaster that ive got plans for, wanted to snag anotehr incase something did happen like it did at dicks and ctd ect. Good thing this rifle is super customizable too! Picked it up at academy for 800. In the two hours of purchasing it 5 other AR rifles were being purchased! Got it at a good time! And i got some bulk 223 ammo at the last gun show along with some 5.56 tracers for fun!

If a ban does happen I'm sure you could double your investment. BCM BCg's are going for $250+ on eBay
