I recently installed an ARB Recovery point (2823010) rated at 8000kg.

    Installation:

while looking for installation instruction online, I was surprised to find a lack of images or videos about the install on a stock Tacoma. I wanted to dump these pictures I took of the stock install, and add a few comments about the installation process.

In general, it was a straightforward, entry level project that is great for any skill levels. The product itself is pretty heavy, (12-15lbs) and some of the bolts are in hard to reach places. It's not necessary to have two people install it, but it would definitely help, especially with securing some of the bolts.

In particular, the M12 bolt x 1.75 x 110mm GD8.8 bolt secure with a Nylon lock was a hassle to tighten alone. I had to pop the hood and jam a wrench around the nylon bolt to secure it enough to torque the bolt on the other side. It took me about 45 minutes to find the perfect spot to place the wrench.

    upload_2023-3-19_9-37-43.jpg

Securing the 3 bolts on the bottom was very straightforward. I used a pliers to hold the non-factory secured nut of the M12 x 1.25 60mm GD10.9

I was able to torque all the bolts/nuts to the specified lb/ft, except the M12 1.25 x 60mm GD10.9 bolt in the front of the recovery point behind where the plastic needed to be cut out. I'm not sure how to get my torque wrench up there. This is the same bolt that requires the use of the "nut stick" (aka a mega doohickie that is just an extremely specific tool for the job). It was actually surprisingly easy to use once I understood how it functioned.

The directions recommend cutting out the plastic wheel well with a jigsaw or air saw, but I found a standard box cutter razor blade worked very easily.

Nice looking truck and great pics/walkthrough!
I have to wonder though: Why didn’t you drop the skid or use a wrench instead of pilers on the nuts? It would have made the entire ordeal much quicker, specifically the 110mm x M12.

This is the first install post I’ve seen that didn’t whine about the nut on the stick. I found it to be simple enough as well. Did you leave the stick attached or snap it off?

A lot of users poopoo it as unnecessary and use the tow hook that comes on the off road instead. That one is beefier and an actual hook instead of a hole in a bent piece of metal. That one attaches with two bolts while, I’m pretty sure but don’t quote me on this, the passenger side tow hook on others only attaches with one bolt.
Oem tow hooks are meant for flat pavement towing not recovery, but people often use them to get yanked out.
The ARB has the most attachments to the frame, is throughly tested and is designed to break away in the event of a front end impact allowing unimpeded airbag deployment and what have you.
It definitely does negatively affects approach angle in the front.
It’s one of those things that has a set price and doesn’t go on sale from any vendor, so it’s just a matter of finding the one with the cheapest shipping. I picked mine up NIB on the forum so don’t have any vendor suggestions unfortunately

Good online Toyota parts aftermarket business sell them.
Tow vs recovery is key. Recovery usually means using snatch aka recovery aka dynamic straps.
Yep, the factory tow hook is not designed as a recovery point. Believe it or not the ARB front bumpers are not designed for recovery points. ether.

That f'ing nut on a stick is something special. Did you take your grill or bumper off or anything. And did you do it solo or did someone help you? Because at the angle you are going in I don't know how you have a hand on the other side to thread in the bolt.

I just spent 3 hours on that damn thing. Gave up and torqued everything else down. Will try another day.

looking back, removing the skid would have been easy and helpful. At the time, I just wasn’t aware. My wrench is super long and just wouldn’t fit, but a wrench would be better.

I just left the nut stick attached. I think it’s just loose and hanging now. Probably should snap off. A bit annoying it doesn’t just come out.

I can only say for certain that it fits with ARB skid plates and stock skid plates.

I did it by myself just lying underneath the truck. I did not remove the bumper or Jack up the truck. I found it to be simple enough, but there is a small degree of luck in getting the angle just right.

Update: went back to retorque everything. The only bolt that needed retightening was the M12 1.25 x 60mm GD10.9 bolt in the front of the recovery point behind where the plastic needed to be cut out and held in place by the bursting. Not surprised as I couldn’t get to it the first time.

I removed some plastic screws holding the plastic part in place using a 10mm wrench. After this, I could peel it back just enough to get my torque wrench in and tighten it to specification. I think it will hold now.

Looking at the pictures of the RCI skid plate, it would appear it should be just fine considering this is the location where the ARB recovery point gets installed.
