It was a crosby shackle, I have seen many break, these were are also used in lifts/etc. Abused and were probably used over the rated capacity by the crew as they were to lazy to grab the proper one.

I use bubba tope soft shackles and a few other brands. They are all the same, I buy what i can get as long as they are rated. Otherwise I do not touch them.

Good to know, I have yet to have one rip on it yet either, just worried it will. Was work trucks I was referring to having them fail.

I have RCI skids and it wasn't an issue. I used a step bit to drill out the hole. The biggest kick in the dick was the nut on the stick. I bent it per the instructions and then practiced a few times without the bolt inserted to get the "feel" for it. It still took a few times to get it. Overall not bad tho.

Someone else mentioned not taking off their skids.....I didn't either, I also didn't remove the tire. I just turned it all the way out and went to work.

Mine didn't need to be removed, was just a bit of fudging around.

I did not think about why you would want the pin to be attached to the anchor point but now it makes sense if it’s the strongest part of a shackle. Thanks for that info.

I thinks it's really more about mechanics...the strap or cable will "self-center" in the curve when pulling from different angles. Otherwise, the cable/strap will pull from the corner of the pin and the shackle could fail earlier than intended.

Very interesting info. It makes me wonder why ARB went though the trouble of printing that colored instruction page saying not to use it with the pin toward the rope... I'm not an expert in this field, just watched a few Ronny Dahl videos lol. I'll see about posting a picture of it when I get home.

I was watching a crane lift a derailed train back onto the tracks in Pine Mtn., GA during the late 70's. A shackle bolt on the harness sheared and shot into a brick wall a few feet from my head. It was 1 1/14" diameter steel. I picked it up as a souvenir and kept it for years. When those things go, they go off like a shot.

Good point, and I would also think if the ring fails, the chances are better of it being retained by the intact pin.

The bolt sheared and not the ring?

Yes, it was a thick steel bolt with a hex nut. It didn't look like it was cut or crushed, more like it snapped in half. It hit the wall hard enough to chip some bricks. Would have done the same to a cranium!
