So yesterday 03-Nov did not start out so great. We had almost two inches of rain Friday night. Saturday morning arrived, it was chilly, in, the low 40's, with a stiff wind out of the WNW and rain in the forecast from 7am-9am or so. Decided to hunt one of my favorite stands, a ladder stand in a large shagbark oak tree. Was set up by 6:30am and awaited the rain. By 7:30am it looked like the clouds were breaking up and actually clearing off to the west.

Ladder stand set up. Four or five acre thicket is to the left of the stand. Buck love to chase doe around in there. Here's the set-up.

By 8:30am the skies have cleared, and I am treated to an absolutely gorgeous fall morning. Blue skies, brilliant colors, plenty of sunshine.

As beautiful and as perfect as the morning was, the deer just weren't moving. By 9:50am I decided I was going to climb down at 10:30. I gave a few grunts on my grunt call and watched the edge of the thicket. Nothing. Pulled out a small Snickers bar, cuz well, hunger and ain't nothing moving. Just finished and glanced over my left shoulder, "Where the heck did he come from?" There he stands 15 yards away, quartering away, looking intently in the opposite direction for the buck her heard, head swiveling back and forth. I picked up my bow, clipped on the release, drew, anchored, let the flo-green pin settle in the "V" behind is shoulder and squeezed. The flo-green nock disappeared right where I was aiming with that hollow thump. He dug in hard and took off, stumbling with each bound. I hung my bow up and had to take in what just happened. After ten minutes I got down and walked over to see this:

    Followed by this:

    And this:

He traveled maybe fifty yards or so.

    wilcam,

It was a Rage 100gr Hypodermic. The shot caught him perfectly, right in the V (you can see the entrance right next to my quiver), the exit was low thru the chest close to the opposite shoulder and forward a bit. I shot mechanicals for years. Rocket 100gr Sidewinders were my choice. Went their quality went south in '09, I switched to fixed blade, primarily Slick Trick standards and Vipertricks and Magnus Stingers. Last year I wanted to try some mech's again. No particular reason, just wanted to try them. Put six deer on the ground between last year and this year and the blood trails were incredible. Dislcaimer. I believe shot placement is the biggest factor in having a good blood trail. I'm pretty certain any of the other broadheads I shoot would have left the same bloodtrail.

So guys, this week it should really heat up. Hit it hard, be safe, and good luck!!
