Only 3 days til I can get out in VA.
I did get out 2 weeks ago for our early rifle and had 5 bucks chasing a doe right in front of me. That was pretty cool to see, unfortunately early rifle is doe only and she wasn't hanging around.

Edit: And im going back to fixed blade broadheads this year. Several issues w/ partial open or no open last year.
Im going to use both Muzzy Trocar and MX-3's

Howdy all, new to archery here. I have a Hoyt compound that I have had sitting around for a few years. Most people have told me that if the strings aren't fraying I should be fine but everything I've read in here tells me I should probably get it restrung before I start practicing with it. Sound about right?

$100-150 is cheap insurance to be confident. Broken string usually means a broken bow

Thank you much! It's a Hoyt Striker I had picked up from a friend of a friend so I really don't know the number of draws or fires. I'm hoping the place near me is open during this COVID thing. For target tips, what would you recommend as a backstop or target in a residential backyard, 3/4 acre? I've heard hay bales or designed targets but wasn't sure tge benefits of each.

Get you a small block target, haybales work but they eventually get wet, rot, stink, and are a mess to clean up. A small block target can be moved or put up easily

    I second this^^
Also, it's pretty common to shoot completely through a hay bale.

That's one of the things that was in the back of my mind. Pretty sure my bow is something like a 60 or 80lb draw

yeah same here. The string caught my pinky finger so that was sore for a few days but could’ve been an awful lot worse. Anytime I pick up my bow or crossbow for the season I do 1/4 partial draws 8 to 10 times back-and-forth. That’s what I was doing when the Hoyt let go. You may want to send that in and have those limbs checked or replaced. I don’t think they handle dry fires very well. Or broken strings. I suppose you could email them and find out. My Hoyt Is a brute plus it has limb savers on it. My archery guy says it could handle it np

took it to the local archery shop, right after it happened, i need cables and a string, but he thinks the limbs are fine, no cracking, so.....we will see... :fingerscrossed:

I've used muzzys for 18 years and recovered everything I hit with them. Can't say the same for the few years I tried mechanicals.

    Yup. ^^^This^^^

    Agreed! ^^^And this^^^

No hay bales. Compound will blow right thru. Stick with a block style (get a good one). Bag targets are ok, but I have noticed after they get shot a bit, if the flectching end goes in, it's a bitch to get out.
