For the last thirteen years or so, my drive to and from work takes me through the farm I hunt. Made for a really nice drive, ‘specially in the fall. About two or three miles past that farm was another property that I always liked. Posted quite heavily. Every time I’d pass through it, I’d think to myself, “Self, that’s a nice piece of ground!”

Did a little digging and found the property owner. My son called, figured a polite young man would have a better chance. No joy. Shot down as the words came out of his mouth. Still, I kept track of the property, ownership, and if vehicles were parked during hunting season.

in late 2020 I noticed a change in ownership. Through some digging on LinkedIn I was able to get an email address. In 2021 I emailed him, explained who I was, and I was looking to possibly bowhunt the property. Explained the farm I hunted was close by and was seeing some serious changes and not for the good. We exchanged several emails, they did allow some bowhunting but they limit it to 3 or 4 hunters. He said check next year and we’ll see what we can work out.

Sooo…I reached out again in August of 2022, when the farm I hunted was sold to the state and opened to the public. Response was give me a little time.

Well, time passed, my old spot turned to crap as it was overrun with hikers, hunters, etc…

I figured I’d try one more time and texted him two weeks ago. This past Thursday we had lunch, signed the trespass agreement and got my written permission for 250 acres.

Moral of the story? Never quit, never give up. I used every available resource from LinkedIn to Gaia to county GIS to gather info on properties to hunt.

Well, I don’t think either one of my boys want it. My oldest boy used to hunt but lost interest when other life things came along and my youngest boy just never was interested in hunting.

The oldest boy lives 2 1/2 hours away and the youngest lives 5 1/2 hours away so when I’m gone I’m sure the land will be sold.

You’d be surprised on what they do when the time comes, I bet. I own land 1k miles away that I grew up on. Get offers nearly every week on it but unless someone wants to pay stupid money for it (and I mean millions, so real stupid money), my kids will own it when I die.

    Prepping for Colorado muzzleloader!

bout to start ordering snacks and peak meals to get rock and rolling. Biggest thing I’m doing right now is dropping body weight for the season. Can’t be a fatty and be able to climb up and down mountains
