How often do you guys restring your bows?

I'm getting back to archery after a long off-period. Haven't shot in 2.5 years and had rotator cuff surgery 18 months ago. Bow has been sitting in the garage in a case for the last two years (insulated but still has temp changes). I originally bought the bow I think back in 2012. I have never re-strung it.

Should I be restringing this thing?

It really depends on how much you shot, did you wax the string, and what conditions was it stored in? If your not sure bring to a shop. If you don't trust it change it. better safe then sorry.

    If in doubt change it.

I took really good care of mine and I just changed mine after 8yrs...It started to look ratty/frayed to me. and I had one string piece right by my peep that was popped and the bow guy said it was good. I said thats ok, Im paying for it so I want it changed. If theres any question about strings in your mind Id change it! The last place you want to find out you should have changed it, is in the stand or where ever and you are about to come to full draw on an animal and it pops on you....

New string(s) & cable, Winners Choice, 60X, is gonna run about $125-$150 installed. All depends on string care, how many shots are on the string/cable. I generally swap every two years, but I shoot from March thru December. After sitting for two years it would still be good to get the bow checked, timing, centershot, axle-axle, brace, etc. Make sure the bow is to spec. I think I would replace just for peace of mind.

My uncle killed a bull yesterday. The stupid idiot packed a tree stand balls deep into the forest (3 miles) and of course that's where he shot it.

We got horses all but the last 300 Yards so it wasn't tooo terrible to get out. Longest part was getting the horses through the dead fall.

It says it's supposed to get down to 75 for a high next Wednesday in Dutch John, the town on the mountain. Season ends on the 16th so I'm hoping the rut kicks in sooner than later.

I know typically peak rut is the first 10days in Oct here...thats why its closed for hunting then. There is an early bow season but if this hot weather doesnt break soon its going to be late for sure.

I totally forgot about waxing the string.

I really feel like I'm re learning everything about archery its been to long lol.

Bow has been sitting in an insulated garage for 2.5 years and strings have maybe been waxed twice since 2012.

I'm going to find a good archery shop and have it looked at.

If you haven't Pulled the bow back in all those years, then you're one waxing before you put it away is sufficient, the wax serves two purposes, one to keep out moisture but more importantly to lubricate the fibers so they don't burn against each other every time you pull the bow back, obviously because you string is made up of hundreds of smaller strings

A friend of mine had one pop in the case...luckily it didnt mess up the bow. If its been sitting for a long period like that I would change it just to be on the safe side.

Without knowing the history of the bow and what it had possibly gone through prior to being in the case, I wouldn't use that as my one and only story for why you should automatically replace. If I'm sounding a bit biased, I probably am because most bow shops will automatically tell you to replace it because it's easy money for them (as a general statement) In the end, if your new to Bows, obviously it's always safer to get a professional opinion but still use common sense for yourself!:duel:

I agree with what you say but for me if I have any doubt I want the string replaced. Compared to the price of a new bow today Im going on the safe side and replace the string. Its really not that expensive IMO just to get the string replaced vs popping a string and possibly severely damaging yourself or your bow. Sometimes the bows handle one popped string other times they break stuff.

Had a little rag 5 come in with a cow, got drawn back and was waiting for the shot when they spooked. I think she smelt my scent trail or something. That's what I get running out of the scent spray stuff.
