Got my 17 last year in September and have loved everything about it so far. Would recommend. Have not had any of the problems listed on the site. Idk it is an enthusiast forum so some minor things will be huge for some people on here. Test drive all the mid-size trucks and then choose. Wait for the Ranger to come out too unless you need a truck right this instant.

Yeah, it was frustrating but then again I do think my truck is somewhat of an outlier. Maybe a Friday truck, IDK but the main point is that most of those issues were things that surfaced in the early days of producing this new generation of Tacoma which have since been resolved in the 18s for the most part. And things like noises, howling, chirping wasn't reliability issues it was just annoying and luckily toyota eventually came out with fixes for them (which I would only have known about b/c of the great community on TW).

I have my truck OVTuned (aftermarket ECU tune) and with that and all my issues resolved my truck is so. much. fun. to drive in any conditions. It's been worth the hassle and that should say a lot about how great the Tacoma is honestly...

I won't be getting anything until the end of this year at the earliest. I like a lot of the features on the American vehicles but I have always heard bad things about their reliability which is why my first inclination was to go with a Toyota. That is why I made this thread cause if Tacomas are really as unreliable as this board makes it seem I might just get one of the American trucks.

No, not unreliable. Most of the issues you see here are noises or drivability (comfort / shifting / etc.,). Very few "my truck left me stranded" threads. It happens for sure, but issues that cause your truck not to start are pretty rare. Biggest driver for that was stalling w/ the CPS which has since been modified to eliminate this issue.

That's good to hear. My biggest fear is getting stranded. If I want to risk that I would just buy something used.

Most new modern vehicles aren't going to leave you stranded if you maintain them properly. My fuel pump was defective at 35,000 miles on my old Ram and I was still able to drive it for a couple more days until I could get it replaced.

Edit: No, the 3rd gens are great trucks. Do I wish Toyota did a better job tuning the drivetrain, yes. Was it a deal breaker for me, no.

Well. Let's be honest. CPS left a lot of people "stranded" and had absolutely nothing to do with maintenance.

Do you have a quantity of people left stranded? A lot constitutes exactly how many proven verifiable cases?

    Since you made the statement.

    Being honest and all....

You read as much as I do on here. You read more than I do in the third gen section. You can bring the wishy-washy prove it bullshit verbiage in like you always do, but yes, there's been instances of 3rd gens on the tow trucks because of CPS. So much that Toyota actually issued a recall. Remember? 32,000 recalls if i remember reading correctly.

True, but when you make a statement that "alot of people were stranded" I was curious as to what number constitutes that.

I have read of a few.

And I believe it was a legitimate follow up.

And I appreciate the work the staff of TW does, truly enjoy the forum.

    Thanks.

Had to google that, didn't even know it was an issue. 32,000 vehicle recall is a drop in the bucket to the multi-million count ones we've seen from the big 3.

The CPS issue has been fixed on the new trucks right? Also is there a chance that the fixed sensor will fail randomly years down line or was it some kind of fluke?

Don't worry, the staff understands the game that you play on TW.
I edited my post just for you. 32,000 vehicles recalled. That's the only empirical number you are going to get.
