If I understand correctly CAFE fuel efficiency guidelines have forced the longer wheelbase trucks upon the consumer. I imagine if someone were to bring a smaller wheelbase back in the near future, the mandated increased mpg would most likely have a negative effect on performance.

Drove a short bed Frontier crew cab 13 years and for what I haul the 5' available bed (w/tailgate down) was ample. This access cab was dwarfed on the sales lot next to the Tundras; imagine my surprise when I brought it home and attempted to close the garage door for the first time. What, what...?

To answer the original question in this thread, I guess for now they're popular even if only in my mind.

Its actually impossible to have an opinion on a visible dimension. He sits back there so clearly its not an opinion . We have driven to other cities with him back there and not one complaint or issue.

Wow, 6ft 2in, our definitions of "pretty well" must differ drastically, because it's hard for me to envision that and call it "fitting pretty well"; but then that would be my opinion.

    My apologies,sorry for any offense.

Just to try and squash it ..fitting a family wise..

I have an access cab and my family taken tons of trips in my truck, we are always going for road trips. It is our weekend vehicle. My kids are 6 and 4. My 6 year old sits in a booster seat behind me, my 4 year old is in a more upright car seat behind my wife. Babies are the hardest to fit in because their seats are so big, as kids get older they fit better and better until they get to early teens, unless they stay shorter :D

    I chose the AC because:
    A) $4k-$6k cheaper than a TRD Sport long bed
    B) We fit.
    C) 6' bed but wheelbase of a TRD DCSB.
    D) It looks better than a DCSB.

My 6 year old, who was 4 at the time of this pic sitting where his brother sits now, same seat:

My driving position when there was a 2 year old behind me, now its the 6 year old in a booster ... way more room:

Plenty of room inbetween the seats for a couple bags or pillows ..

I like my DC never really been a big fan of the AC in any truck, but thats just me. To each their own.

True, but I personally wouldn't want to wheel something that long lol

I think those would-be RC buyers would go with a AC before a DC....

Because demand exceeds supply right now, as evidenced by Tacomas taking three spots in the top-10 list for fastest selling pickups (shortest time on dealer's lot - http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2014/10/septembers-fastest-and-slowest-selling-pickups.html). Toyota can only make X Tacomas per year. Whether the production mix is 65/35 or 55/45, all will get sold, so Toyota will choose 65/35 because double cabs are more profitable. Tundras are more profitable still, so Toyota might throttle Tacoma production to make more Tundras. This will change in a couple of years when the expanded Mexico line comes online.

Double cabs didn't have the marketshare with 1st gen Tacos. 2nd gen Tacos have grown in size to approach old full-size pickups, so double cabs are now more feasible than before.

The headrests are troublesome to remove in the '09-'15 models. The seat belts even more so.

my second taco was an AC.. loved it at first.. thought to myself.. "i dont need a double cab.. i dont carry my friends around and they look dumb"

i soon realized i hated the Bermuda triangle called the rear doors when in parking lots, garages, or any other daily routine..

on my 3rd taco now.. and got the double cab.. and I will never go back to the AC..
