Noisy, I put my cell phone in the engine compartment turned on recording and went for a drive. When I got home and played it back I couldn't believe it. Sounded like someone
banging the pots and pans with a metal spoon.

In retrospect Toyota should have just rebranded the 1st Gen Tundra as a 2nd Gen Tacoma, then moved on to the bigger 2nd Gen Tundra.

There's a lot of similarites. 1st Gen Tundra is about 75" wide same as 2nd Gen Tacoma. 2005 Tundra Access cab 218" length with the 6.1 ft bed but the great rear 60/40 split bench with actual padding and comfort for rear passengers. Same 218" length as the 2nd Gen Tacoma DCSB. Leather on the Limited edition. And the Limited does have the power rear slider along with Class IV tow package, oil and tranny coolers, LSD rear diff. The transfer case looks like the same, same front diff, same rack and pinion, same brakes.

Has the same two-piece drive shaft to the rear but a better carrier bearing setup without the extreme angles the 2nd Gen Tacoma has. The crossover exhaust on the 4.7l is not hanging down looking to get picked off.

I can't figure out why Toyota didn't make them the same since they went to the larger dimensions on the 2007 Tundra. Why not make the 2nd Gen Tacoma the same grade as the 1st Gen Tundra? Slap the nice 4.7L in as an option, they were planning on all new motors for the 2nd Gen Tundra. They would be two different marketing groups.

Limited tundra in 03 had a power slider(dealer could have opt out said no on the build) .... On my 03 sr5 im doing the conversion now from manual to power... I will say toyota was nice to leave the power wires in for me for a slider...:D

Oddly enough, my Dad's '05 with 70k is considerably quieter than my '11 with 42k.

I felt the same with my '98 2.4L. Had the loudest stock exhaust I've ever heard on a 100% stock truck. I always thought it was one of those Easter egg items some engineer put in the pipeline before quitting their job at Toyota. '95.5 through '99 trucks sounded like they had a glass pack from the factory.

Also '92-' 95 3.0L, V 6 trucks and 4Runner also had an unusually loud and throaty exhuast from the factory.

Not exactly. Not going to retype or copy-paste the whole thing, but:
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...aco-same-size-1st-gen-tundra.html#post7069194

74.6 for Tacoma and 75.2 for Tundra... but the Tacoma includes the flares, that model Tundra did not have flares.
The track is more revealing, with the Tundra front track being about 3" wider, and the interior dimensions don't seem like much until you're sitting in one... they are substantial.
Comparing access cab to access cab, Tacoma is a full 10" shorter at 208".
The DCSB is the same frame as the AC, so I'm not sure where you're getting 218" for the DCSB.
Agreed. The 1st Gen Tundra was an awesome truck and I wish they still built it.

But seriously on the electric fans, take the advice or leave it, it's your money but I have spent a lot of time on a dyno and the 2-3 hp (that is all) you get switching is not worth the money spent on fans. I have done a few custom twin fan setups with Spal, but it was only to accomodate a front mounted twin or single turbo and centrifugal blowers for the added room. And unless your going to drop the $700+ setups like that the factory fan moves more air.

Man, I have a crappy memory, and an apparent inability to make side-by-side comparisons properly. Thanks for the correction . . . .

I find the engine relatively quiet honestly...

Maybe its because the chirping of my throwout bearing is louder than the engine

My 2.7 seems a LOT quieter when my wife is in the cab with me.

But seriously... the Tacoma is a loud truck. I can't use the voice-to-text on my phone when on the road, no matter how loud I yell. It misses words, puts together fucked up phrases, or just ignores me.
When traffic comes to a stop, it works beautifully... except for the time my wife asked where I was and the phone told her "San Dumbass" instead of "San Dimas"

I've never had a problem with voice commands on my iphone even doing 70-75 though, and I have a Flowmaster 50 and my tires are getting worn so they give some decent noise

I would check the motor mounts too especially with that many miles on it, my 2009 is quiet, but it also has 1/2 the mileage. Luckily Tacos run FOREVER, so you should get another 250k out of it.

A couple other nice things about the 1st gen Tundra is the rear step bumper is about 2" longer so you can actually get your feet on it, and the access cab windows vent. And a lock on the tailgate. Column shifter. Heated mirrors.

And until 2002 or 2003, locking gas door.

But that 4.7... that bitch was a screamer of an engine. I loved it and couldn't figure out the guys on TS who bitched that it was underpowered. 240hp out of what is basically a short-stroke 285 pushing a truck that weighed about the same as a T100... ya... it was quick.

Just an update on this.. (i am the OP), i either had an exhaust lead or it was because my cats were blown out. Turns out the engine needed head gaskets, which is a known issue on 05 and 06 engines, so i did them myself. My cats were also blown out of both manifolds. Now that everything is together again, the engine is half the noise as before. When you do head gaskets you also replace the exhaust manifolds.

Just a heads up to all you with "sewing machine" engines!! I could have swore it was just my engine, hearing that "tick" but i am pretty sure it was an exhaust leak now.
