Well, there are probably a few reasons for that.... Older = wiser? Caps cost money, usually you have more disposable income as you get older.

You might look into a trailer. Way more versatility.

I put a cap on my 09 about just under 2 years ago, love it, love it. love it (middle aged now). I have been looking at ordering one for my 17, but the wife keeps saying, "Why you trying to make the truck look like a SUV? you should have just got one instead."

So, I figure, I will wait, we will go camping, her shit will get wet and then she will want the cap to keep shit dry like we have the last two summers.

It does reduce the bed utility and make it more SUV like. But, I like being able to keep all the muddy gear, dogs, etc in the back and out of the cab of the truck. Also, it's nice to be able to have a secure place for the mountain bike out of the elements. Also, It's nice to have a instant sleeping area out of the elements. Also, it give me an excuse not to help people move.

I always get boggled when people say something about making it look like an SUV. Looks aren't the point. I want to keep gear out of the elements and I don't want to throw gas cans, dirty gear, or animal carcasses "inside" the vehicle. Truck with a cap is the perfect solution.

Sheesh...I've had Shell/no Shell. It doesn't bother me having one on because of the versatility that it offers.

I roll up to a campsite and don't even have to set up a tent. I can be to sleep in a minute. Same as if I wake up, ready to go in a minute.

Which goes to why I won't own a 5ft bed. You can't sleep in it, unless you modify a deck system that goes over the tailgate, and bring down with a tarp of somesort... no thanks.

Also RTT, you could say those offer great versatility, using the bed for your gear, and sleep up top...yet again, you reduce aerodynamics(mpg hit), still setting up tent, extra cost, etc.

The argument of why didn't you just get an SUV if your putting a shell on, is bogus.

1.I can't get a damn SUV that's worthy of buying that doesn't have a manual transmission.
    2. I can always take my truck shell off(I do all the time), and have the versatility of both on/off. Can't do that with an SUV, or else you have to tow a trailer.

I see a lot of people spending money on wants vs. needs and just keeping camping simple. I'm 29 and finally figuring out less is more.

Function over fashion. I use this ideology for most any purchase, and have 'tried' for years to convert my wife.
I started running a cap on my trucks in my early 20's and was a little hesitant due to the 'old man truck' look. I'm now in my mid 30's and I'll never own a truck without a camper shell.
I now prefer the aesthetics of a truck with the shell, and the functionally is something I cannot go without.

The 3gen bed is deeper so your cooler may fit.

I'm old and have a cap on my 2013. hell the cap dose not fit the best I think its for a first gen. I never had a cap for any of my trucks. I got this one very cheap to see if I liked it. I do like it. I use mine for camping almost every week (so no room for recyclables no beer cans). I am making a sleep platform this winter. I also plan on getting a cap that is correct for my year truck.

    just my 2 cents
oh the truck is dark blue and the cap is a tan color so looks where not a concern to me.

I will be getting a ARE Shell soon. My wife isn't too concerned with it looking old, she says it'll make it look redneck. Who cares what she thinks! I am getting it for its functionality.
