I'm heading up to Carson City from the bay area tomorrow and I have four-wheel-drive and Duratracs. Anybody know if they will require chains or if the Duratracs pass as snow tires?

Duratracs are snow rated. They make an excellent snow tire without any chains. You can put studs in them though.

The Duratracs pass as a snow tire. One of the main reasons I bought them for my truck.

As long as you have the 3 peaked mountain snow flake stamped on your tires (which the Duratracs do) you'll be fine.

The chain control guys will be memorized by the SCS's and won't even check.

Air down a little bit in a snowing situation and you'll be fine. Alot of us run them in the snow and gave zero problems!

When I was up in Yosemite National Park two weeks ago, chain control r1 and r2 were in effect. But even then, I still saw countless sedans, mini vans, SUVs with obvious street tires, running without chains. I was disappointed the Rangers weren't actively enforcing as I saw several avoidable accidents.

I haven't seen pavement in months due to the snow, but lots of people wayyyyy up here north run them. Just don't drive like an idiot and you'll be fine!

From my experience they're great in snow, not good on ice(then again what tire really is). That's an observation at full street pressure.
