I have some wheel spacers that are too thick to work with the stock lugs.. I bought some longer lugs in order to use them as safely as possible. Now im confronted with the reality of installing them, which looks grim. Ive investigated taking the drum assembly apart but can't figure out how to separate it from the hub to get it out of the way. the new lugs are too long to fit into the space between the mounting plate and back of the brake. has anyone else faced this and found a solution? Id be oh, so grateful for some words of advice. thanks in advance.IMG_3707.jpgIMG_3708.jpg

Im pretty sure you will have to take the axles out to install those lugs

it's possible to put longer ones in the rear drum, I had TCCN automotive shop in Chicago install them, they didn't have to pull the axles out

Removing the axle isn't hard, definitely worth the saftey factor IMHO.

I'd use ARP studs if you were going to do it at all, especially if running spacers.

I’d love to know how. You can see from the pic I posted there isn’t even close to enough space for the ones I have

@Zoey'sTaco Do you have the part number for those studs? They look to be the perfect length. I'm thinking about changing mine as well to get a little more thread engagement on the lug nuts.

FWIW, pulling the axles won't help since the wheel bearing is pressed on the back side of the drum backing plate. The easiest way to get around this would be to drill an access hole in the backing plate and then use a rubber plug to cover the hole.

actually, I think they're a bit long. I only need about another 1/4" to get past the lugs im using and these are at least another .5" longer than that. ive had them forever (putting off installing them) and I don't recall where I ordered them from

I was kinda wondering that. and would just need to yank the brake shoes and springy parts to get them out of the way

Those are studs not lugs FYI. Some creative grinding / drilling and you have to push them through on an angle not straight in to get the most clearance.

I didn't ask, maybe they bent some drum brake components to get access, but I don't think they drilled anything

the studs need to be 1/4" longer in order to protrude past the outboard surface of the lugs I thread onto them when fully tightened. sorry I wasn't clear

You just have to find a spot where you can make an access hole in the backing plate that lines up with the hole in the hub, make a hole just big enough for the big end of the stud to fit through, and then put a rubber plug or plastic plug in the hole when you are done to keep dirt and grime from getting in your drums.
