Are manual trannys old school, out of style/function?

Just joined, first post other than the intro post for newbies, trading my '93 4X2 in for a TRD Sport, manual tranny. Anyone else go with a manual? I was shopping and Ford only has a auto, loved the F-150 3.5L power, so after some thinking and realizing my old pu was pretty good, even with 270,000 on it still pretty reliable went with another Toy. I mainly plan to use my truck for getting firewood, getting around in the snow a little easier and maybe a few places my old truck would never be able to go. Is the auto transmission on the way out? At 62, am I old school or just out of touch? Cut my teeth on a manual back in the late 60's. My dad could always see where I can driven on the farm by the 6" scratch marks I left with my uncoordinated clutch, gas pedal sync. :)

There are a surprising amount of people with manuals here actually. One of the few things you can still get a manual on. If you like them more power to you get it while you can. Yes manuals are on their way out. I have a whole gamut of reasons I prefer them over autos, but you already know the advantages. I figure that by the time I am done with this truck I'll be lucky if they offer a manual in anything except a sports car any more.

The new age Auto is just more efficient and easy to drive and text at the same time. (Sadly there is truth to that second part)

Manual is out of date, more things to go wrong, more maintenance down the road as well. As much as I love driving a standard. My Z06 is a blast, autos make sense in today's world.

I love manuals and I really like the manual tranny in the 2016. Drove really nice. If you are okay with not having all the power of the full size you will enjoy it. I felt like the 3.5L with 6 speed manual had plenty of pull though. Shifted real nice too.

Not many sports cars have manuals not have they in a few years. It's all auto with paddle or slap shifters. More base cheapo cars/trucks have it available than sport cars now a days

With the exception of maybe the Mustang/challenger and a few other muscle cars. Most of the high end import sports cars Mercedes, Bmw, Lamborghini, Ferrari, ect haven't had manuals for a while

My truck is my first 4WD and my first manual and I never plan to buy another vehicle unless it's a manual. The only exception is when I'm too old.

Lots of people would disagree with this. Manuals are highly repairable whereas new automatics are super complicated and some are completely sealed off. The new manual in the 2016 was redesigned. It is a pleasure to drive. Obviously autos get better mileage now but the reason you get a manual in 2016 is because you like to drive the truck rather than ride in it.

Manual transmissions are the only kind that should be in trucks, imho

(Nothing personal to those that choose an automatic for medical reasons)

Don't get me wrong I love driving a stick, however it can get annoying if it's your daily driver. My work vehicle is manual and there are plenty of times I wish it was automatic.

    Traffic is the worst

Mine have been daily drivers for an hour + each way since 2009 in some of the worst traffic in the US behind LA (south Florida)

And now in OKC, I'm 30 mins each way on really bad OK roads.

I seem to be getting along just fine somehow.

I had a manual ranger as a dd for 8 years. I loved it, until I had to drive through Houston at rush hour every other weekend or so.

Only time a manual sucks is in slow-moving traffic jams. Aren't really many of those in my town but last time I drove to Denver it did suck being stuck in traffic. Just normal city driving is enhanced by a manual I think.

Yeah stop n go, bumper to bumper traffic for an hour or more in a manual is brutal, especially when your truck has no AC like mine at the time... and the throttle cable stuck sonetimes. I do truly miss downshifting around corners in town, throwing it into 3rd from 5th to pass on the highway, etc

Toyota Corp decided that their flagship trim -- the TRD Off-Road Access Cab -- shouldn't have a manual transmission.

I always had manual transmissions until I got my Tundra....never looked back. Never had AC until my Tundra.......never looked back. Guess it has to do with that Old thing you were talking about. OK, the AC was mainly a product of the deletion of "Wind Wings" in favor of one piece front door windows which made AC almost mandatory (then again I drive with AC on and the window down). Auto Trannys are a bit for the lazy, but that comes with old also...still have a stick in the FJ40, but if I was building one now it would be an auto also.

This is my first truck with an automatic since my very first car. I've had numerous sports cars all in manual over the years and while I miss shifting, I do enjoy driving an auto this go around. That being said, if the Limited came with a manual 6 speed I would have gotten it over the auto.
