Are manual transmissions really that unpopular?

You can jump start with a power tool battery. Depending on the charge state of the truck battery it might not need much extra but I've done it without even enough to click the solenoid.

I suppose so, if you're parked somewhere in the middle of nowhere and that's the only way, but at this point, you're well beyond the stage of convenient bump-starting and the territory of just parking on a hill until you have the time (money?) to get into a parts store to get a new battery. If you are in a position to wire it to a tool battery, then you're *probably* in a position to wire it to another car and just start it up.

Many homeowners have cordless tools now and if you're in construction you carry the stuff wherever you go. I'd prefer a standard jump but provided this option for those who might not have thought of it and dont have another option. Dead batteries aren't always preceeded by neon warnings and other cars(or their owners) aren't always available.

yes. all about the control, and more than just shifting. from a performance POV and MT also helps me control weight balance and weight shifting on the truck that you won't have total control of in a AT. but that requires much more driver skill than most even MT drivers will go for.

I wonder if there is a correlation with the greater number of people who can't parallel park properly without computer assistance

When I park at home on a daily basis, I back down-in neutral, down a steep curving driveway into a tight parking spot, it can be tricky in broad daylight, and on a dark night it can be especially challenging. There is no way I would want an auto transmission in pulling it off.

My next vehicle won't have a manual. I'm over driving them. I have manuals since I got my license. I did have one automatic in an Accord.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Yeah this is how I feel, I used to love driving them after I got my license but the novelty wore off fast once I got out of college. So I sold my manny Tacoma and bought and auto, never looked back! I have a Mustang and Powerstroke for whenever I get the urge to row gears. I could never daily drive one again though, heck with that! I drive 13 and 18 speeds for a living, the last thing I wanna do when I get back into my personal vehicle is to change gears.
I guess I don't see how this is any different in either transmission? Putting either in neutral has the same effect.

Neutral won't engage the reverse lights. TBH I could be satisfied by either one. An auto demands less attention being a point/shoot while a manual provides more visceral rpm control.

Perhaps you are right, it's been thirty years since I've owed an automatic, so I can't really do a fair comparison.

I think I have a relatively unique situation that is severely jading my opinion. So sorry for the rant.

I live in rural Virginia, so much so that I have no internet choice but satellite or wireless. Population keeps expanding into rural areas because they want "country" living in their suburban-like, neighborhood-islands, that used to be forest or farm fields They're afraid to drive on two lane roads, constantly going under the speed limit and have a mile of traffic behind them. When one turns off, the driver behind does the same thing. If you try to pass them in a passing zone, they race you. My commute is 27 miles one way, takes me 45-55 minute. I am either stopping, or downshifting, every half mile to a mile, no exaggeration, because there aren't any left turning lanes, and even people making right turns come to a stop. People also have no concept of anticipating a hill before they get there. They just drop in speed until everyone's at a crawl by the time we hit the top (and I've downshifted several times). I am not talking about old people, this is almost everyone, many times playing their phones. This is also not unique to just my commute, my work requires that I travel a good amount to at least 30 different counties in the state, it is getting like this all over the central VA area.

I don't think I'm inexperienced or lack skill, like st.germain suggested. I have 145,000 miles on my original clutch and no issues. Still on original brake pads too. It just gets dang annoying to hardly ever shift into 5th gear until I am 5 miles away from my house. And to have to row through the gears almost constantly. It's worse than city commuting IMO.

    Okay, phew! Rant over.

An auto trans is preferred over a manual in drag racing as your Et / mph is much more consistent . Torque converter technology has come along way and is much more advanced than in previous years

145,000 on the original brake pads? I'd say you've gotten your moneys worth.

Sadly, I think this is very, very true. It's extremely pathetic, I'm sure 75% of this forum is completely guilty of that exact thing. Then they fly around at 90 mph and complain about how their auto trans acts or how craptastic their mpgs are. "You mean, I'm responsible for the shit way my car responds to my shit driving habits, NEVER!!! Toyota Sucks!!!! Gonna buy a Danger Ranger!!!! Rabble Rabble Rabble!!!!!"

I'm not addicted to my phone. Or Food. I have Auto & Manual Tacoma's.

I pick the manual to drive for 98% of daily driving. Cause 2TR-FE.
