My experience is unless you reallllly reaaalllly need it, it's not worth it. You will just be more annoyed and regretting the decision to do it

Fact. As an intern staying a summer in PA, I roomed with 3 of our female interns.

I want my money back, that was the most bullshit summer I ever spent not getting laid and settling petty disputes turned blood feuds.

I'll buck the trend - I've lived with non-girlfriend housemates for 12 of the past 16 years including off-campus college housing (I'm 35 right now).

Living with other people is a learned skill but so is finding people to live with. You need to find someone who is:
    1. Similar level of cleanliness as you - it will never work if you're a slob and they're a neat freak but two slobs are great and two neat freaks are great. People lie about this a lot.
    2. Communicates - leaving post its or ignoring things until it boils over is a bad time. Works both ways. People lie about this a lot.
    3. Is considerate, but you both have to be considerate. Sometimes you have to accept that your housemate has to be up at 5 am so you stop playing music at 9 or go over to a friends house instead of having people over. This is one thing I've avoided in most housemates, if you say looking for someone "quiet" in the ad people seem to actually pay attention to it.

If you can accomplish those 3 things it will avoid 95% of housemate troubles and save a lot of money on rent. I've probably saved an average of $500 a month over 12 years or $72,000 just on rent then figure half of utilities probably another $7-10k versus living alone. I could have bought a Raptor for that! WTF am I doing here

Pretty sure you can get free room and board if you enlist in the military.

I still do. I don't need one but I get along with the person living with me, and I like their money in my pocket.

Of course, I've had roommates I would have kicked to the curb no hesitation too if I could have footed the bill myself.

My recommendation is to see if you can rent from a homeowner, which generally means a more responsible and mature roommate. There are quite a lot of homeowners in Colorado that rent out their extra bedroom/basement to help offset their mortgage. I moved to CO 8 years ago from Texas, and the biggest culture shock for me was how small and cozy people live in CO compared to Texas. Houses tend to have smaller footprint, and Coloradoans generally get by with a smaller space.

Sounds like my wife. Though she is one room mate that has stuck around for 20 years or so. Just glad I am past the other room mate stage of my life. Had some good ones and had some terrible ones
