Why worry about what an automatic transmission is doing. As long is it is not downshifting and over revving the engine, why care? The auto trucks are tuned for fuel economy and all the shifting is a consequence.

Yeah, I get that. For some people, the constant shifting around for small topographical changes in the road or head winds (while in cc) may not be an issue. Again, for me, it was a deal breaker. It also wasn’t that the 2018’s were just downshifting once, they were often going to 4th then 5th then 6th just to get up a gradual grade. Right now the 2nd gen is working much better for me. I may be getting 1-3 mpg less than a 3rd gen but l like how the power train works.

owned mine for over a year now (bought June 10th 2017) and I love it, transmission takes some time to get used to and needed the tsb update. other than that its been fantastic except for my body mounts being shot (37k on the truck)

My 2018 tacoma lost power going to work one morning. I have 5000 miles and dropped to 15 mph . had to be towed in, given a Camry to drive, placed a tech. Call for someone from California. Been in the shop for 10 days. No clue when it will be fixed, parts are back ordered, etc....paid $30,000 and driven for 6 months. Who knows when it will be fixed or returned. I'm diagusted to say the least.

Would it have been better if your truck cost 20,000!

Mines got the whining rear diff noise pretty bad. During my 5k service the technician test drove it and heard it as well so that’s good I guess. Just need to drop it off and get a loaner. Other than that I love it!

Still breaking in mine (manual) at 2500 miles, but I am happy with it. Do I think Toyota could have done a better job with the engine tuning? Yep. Would the severity of that issue have stopped me from buying? Nope.

Couldn't agree with you more. I called Yota corporate today to see what they could do for me - I have had the truck for a week, and after they performed the updates, the truck still shifts crazy in my opinion. I bought the truck because my little Honda CRV couldnt pull my utility trailer very well in the hills up north. If this Tacoma can't maintain speed in 6th gear in a headwind, then how is it going to pull a trailer? And yes I am aware of the S drive. A truck shouldnt be acting like it is laboring constantly and searching for the right gear - and when it has to shift to fifth and sometimes 4th (Yes 4th!) in order to maintain speed on a slight incline, then there HAS TO BE something wrong. That engine has POWER you can tell, it just needs to be tweeked - the thing of it is, Yota hasnt been able to tweek it correctly yet after 2.5 years.

I really LIKE every other thing about the truck, and believe me, I tried to get passed the shifting concerns, but in the end this truck just isnt functional in my mind.

Zero issues with mine so far. I got the MT and haven’t noticed any lagging problems I hear about on here.

I have had several issues with mine. Its going back into the shop tomorrow. The rear end has locked up a few times for no apparent reason while driving low speeds. Maybe diff issues but I am no mechanic. This is the 3rd time in the 3k miles it has on it that it has to get worked on.

Ugghh.....man.....this subject has been beaten to death.:deadhorse: X 10000.......sometimes I think this whole website should be called “Tranny World”, but that name is likely already taken and I’m afraid to google it.

I am interested to know your build date and place of origin. I bought mine just before Labor day weekend. I wasn't happy with the shifting. I had them put the latest update in it and I "think"? its better? It seems to me like I remember it being smoother immediately after the update , but parked it, and it seemed like it wasnt better when I drove it again. I would have thought that by now that they would have worked out the bugs with this generation being new in 2016. Anybody think that there will be another update that fixes all these shifting concerns? Or maybe the new 2018's and 2019's are all fixed and so we are a forgotten bunch?

I am of the opinion that feedback on products tend to reflect more dissatisfied Customer's experience.
I read this forum content with interest since I might trade vehicle in a few months, or in a couple of years... Might try the V6 for a change...
I own a 2016 SR5, 2.7L, 6AT, extended cab. It has 26,000 km on it so far. No problem whatsoever, cabin is quiet and without rattle, ride is comfortable, it easily carries a 1,000 pound payload. I do not tow anything, though. Had the differential checked after a recall from Toyota, but everything was ok. It has a peculiar mechanical response: if the expansion tank is more than half full, it will regurgitate the coolant through he overflow. But it won't go low.
Everything is working perfectly, I use the 4x4 during winter time and I manage to ride it on gravel roads a few times during summer.
During the 2018 fall, we took a 3,000 km road trip to Nova Scotia where there is plenty of hilly roads. It downshifted from 6th, to 5th, to 4th many times while rpm would go into the 4,000 - 4,500 and some noise. It does the same on highway ramps when I want to merge at a fair speed. No problem with that for a 159 HP engine moving a heavy pickup truck.
So, I have not much to complain about.
I have reported on another tread my experience with a used 2012 SR5 Tacoma, with a mileage in the 50,000 km. Costed 4,000$ worth of repairs in 10 months, hopefully all under warranty. An abused vehicle, a lemon, who knows?
Well, that is my present contribution to this forum. Thanks to others.

I have a 2016 TRD Sport with premium tech package with now 26k on it. My wife has a Ford Explorer with a 3.5 6 speed auto and it shifts more than my Taco. The only complaint I have is the back seat is worthless for adults. I went from a F150 to this and can't drive my friends more than a mile or 2 or put a case beer behind the front seat.

I have a 2015 Explorer Police Interceptor Utility with the 3.5L Ecoboost and the 6-Speed automatic. I have zero complaints with the transmission. The best highway vehicle I've ever owned, period.

Now the strut mounts and suspension, that's another story. :)
