I should preface this by saying that I am not normally this sheepish about my truck, but this is my first NEW vehicle, and my old lady said i have to keep it NICE for a long time. It was drill and mount first and ask questions later with my jeep. that thing had an incredible rack.

oh for sure man. I would not get this rack at all, but it is a good examble of what I want. damn, I realized something...the tonneau I want is retractable not one of the piston ones. in fact going back to the latter comment, if you folk find something better please I am all ears. For clarity here is what I am trying to accomplish: I load up my boards (1100 each) on the rack with the locking racks I have, throw my wetsuit (600) and gear in the bed along with my equipment for work (a lovely electronic fruit company with very expensive equipment) which is crazy expensive. shut the metal rolling tonneau cover, lock the boards down surf, then go to work (the numerical values is to show why I am so anally retentive about security.)

This is what I was thinking about except you have an AC so the bed is a foot longer than this truck pictured

    * by this rack I mean the rack i gave a link for....

also, please be as brutally honest as you want. As I said, I am new to pickups and new to tacomas, I have a lot to learn.

again for clarity this is the tonneau sort I am looking at using...

This guy's set up is another way to approach it with a rack at the back in the tow hitch and the front of the boards or kayak in this case on the roof rack

yeah, I have seen that sort of set up before. that would work. that may be the way to go. I just have a specific set up I want to accomplish in my head. two thule support bars. one behind the access cab, or at this point a rear factory rack on it and the other one bolted on the back by the tailgate. Inno boardlocker rack bads on both bars. I can lock the boards on the rack, park anywhere and not worry about someone taking out my hitch bar or tailgate, and still haul some mishapen monstrosity of a box You would ask, "Why not go with the solution I just showed you?". Sheer stubbornness and a vision I must accomplish.

No , I think you should get what you want , I just think you are going to have to get fairly creative to have the tonneau in your link and the crossbars without a good mounting system for the bars .

Maybe you could reinforce the bed caps from underneath enough to accept the croosbar mounts .

yeah. I miss my welder. I really need to get under there and see what we have to work with. I love the gas savings but man I preferred it when the body of a vehicle had a bit more thickness to the metal.

awesome link. thank you. looks like it is measurement time and Autocad time. My major concern is just the strength of the side walls which should not really be a concern if the weight is distributed among the whole rail. right?
