I have an 04 Tacoma. While driving home today my truck lost throttle response. Between 1-75% of pedal travel nothing happens. 75%-100% I was able to limp home. I played with the throttle body and when I rotate the wheel the butterfly doesn't move. After googling around I couldn't find much except an is300 forum saying their throttle is mainly computer controlled with the throttle cable not doing much. I got a cel last week and the day it came up autozone checked it. Came up as gas cap. I'm going to check it again tomorrow. Anyways here's a video of what it is doing.

EDIT: I'm dumb and found my answer after 2 more minutes of googling.

I think 03-04 have some early type of electronic throttlebody

Yah, you're right. I edited my post right when you replied. Guess I'll check the code tomorrow and hope it's cheap.

there are 2 sensors on the 03-04 TB. the front sensor is called the "APPS" (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor) which lets the ECM know where your foot is on the pedal (how far you pressed it) and the rear is still the "TPS" (Throttle Position Sensor) relaying back to the ECM where the actual butterfly is after the motor under the TB rotates it (from the reading of the APPS). If any one of these mechanics of the ETCS goes it causes the limp mode as the ECM cannot accurately determine what's going on.

like you've found you have to pretty much floor it to get enough throttle to get going as the cable is the fail-safe.

The TPS is a part that fails a lot apparently, @mechanicjon has been doing a lot of work to find a supplier for the individual TPS since Toyota only sells it bundled with the throttle body - you can't find it otherwise.

not "a lot" but it has been known to fail. unfortunately we don't have a ton of data on the ETCS versions of the TB to make that assumption :)

for the 02 and earlier it was just buy a replacement and no one really cared

a little off topic but if the 03-04 have "electronic" Throttle parts will that make a difference if you are installing a supercharger for those specific years of trucks?

do you need to do anything special or different when installing the 3.4L TRD supercharger with the electronic throttle? will the cruise control operate the same as the previous non'electronic year models?

    thanks

the supercharger is after the TB in sequence so nothing gets changed. you may need the "7th injector" kit to keep it from getting lean at higher rpm but that's true of most 3.4 setups

Thanks for the info guys. I went to walmart and got a cheap obd2 reader. I had my battery disconnected all night. I hooked it back up, plugged the obd2 reader in and now my truck isn't throwing any codes and is running perfect(only drove about a mile). So I'll have to wait for it to happen again.

If it was your TPS it's only a temporary fix. I removed mine and then replaced it. Worked great for two months then the issues started up again. Ended up buy a used throttle body from a junk yard. It's probably been 4 months. Truck runs great but who knows how many miles on the one I have. Tried looking over seas in China. Nobody had it. Be prepared to have a solution if it goes out.

Yah it came back later the next day. And now occurs within 3 miles and goes in to limp mode. I'm scared to pick one up from a junk yard for $200 because i plan to have the truck for a while. Might just pay for a new throttle body.

I know. It sucks. My truck has 220k on the OD. Don't plan on getting rid of my truck.
