It must be a real dud if they didn't provide at least on of them for the reviews.

Its been a dud since they canned the single cab.

The new 6 lug only trucks should not have a 4 cyl option and honestly will only sell because of lack of V6 stock.

Plus, if you put on 35 inch tires, the 4 cylinder might get worse mileage because it has to run a higher RPM to gain speed while driving. This is even if you reggae both the front and back.

if you buy a 2016 4 cyl truck and add 35 inch tires you need to re evaluate your life...

who says everyone is going to put bigger tires on their truck? who says everyone wants to have the v6? or has the extra couple grand for the v6?

the dc 4cyl is a price point truck.

probably did 0-60 in 13 seconds and had the worst stopping distance.. what a total waste.

They are trying to pretend that it doesn't exist. It is a carry over from the 2nd gen. In its original application it was intended as a cheap, durable engine for the 5 lugger regular cab. It remained a surprisingly popular option partly because the v6 had such relatively poor fuel economy.

I think the current 2TR is a stop-gap engine until they get their global architecture 4 cylinder up and running some time in the next few years. The new v6 is one of their global architecture v6 engines and it's going to appear in a lot of different models across the lineup in the future. They will probably stick a cheaper but more fuel efficient 4 banger in there to lower cost and meet rising CAFE standards. or they could just drop it from the lineup entirely if other manufacturers offer a product that steals the 4 bangers 'cheapest option' market niche. It depends a lot on if they can continue at max production with a standard v6. Either way, I can't see them keeping the 2TR for much longer.

A small turbo 4 seems like a bridge too far. They might do it if they can build it cheap and it runs on 87 octane. I don't know if this market is ready to drive a truck with a strictly economy focused small displacement turbo. It doesn't seem like Toyotas style. They'd probably do a 2.5L naturally aspirated that has the same torque as the 2TR but with improved efficiency and more horsepower.

Good article ! About the only place that actually buys many of these 4 cyl trucks is the north east. From what I understand, if the northeast did not exist, neither would a four cylinder Tacoma. That's probably becasue it is crowded and there are fewer wide open stretches where speed is a factor. This motor could easily be reworked to produce 180 lb so there would be a little pretense .

if you have money for mods like lift and tires, you can afford the $900-$1200 extra the V6 will cost in all reality.

4Cyl engines belong in commuter cars... Not big ass trucks.

Had to lol here. The 4 cylinder in a reg cab 4x4 with reg tires was a nice truck. Gutless, but a solid truck.

Speculating: I wonder if they intended to put the new 4 cylinder turbo they are using in the Lexus NX, IS and now GS in the Tacoma and intended to release the new Tacoma in 2017. But then GM released the twins with plans for a diesel that looked like it was selling well and thus Toyota was forced to show their hand and release the new (incomplete but sellable) Tacoma earlier than intended, and the engine was either a. not ready for the Tacoma yet, or b. didn't want a Toyota getting that engine before it was available on all their lexus models that were supposed to get that engine.

Old guys who remember when the early 4wd Toyota truck only came with a gutless 4 cylinder, might want one. Or, buy it for your kids so they don't " speed ". I predict that the six speed transmission will be in OD going down hill with a tail wind.

Those single cab gutless 4 bangers were what earned Toyotas reputation in reliability. Still tons on the roads.

The only reason they even have the 4cyl imo is to run out the over supply from the last model. There is really no reason to keep it other than to offer a cheaper option for flower shop owners.

I think they planned to do just what they did. I can see a boost eventually, but for now, promoting the sales of the more expensive 6 while the hype is strong is the marketing decision. There is a 2.7 180 hp four from the Highlander that is just waiting for use just like as the 3.5 was. Toyota doesn't want to overwhelm the buying public with choices. ;-)

lets see... $1200+ plus cost difference most likely for identical MPG and almost 2x the power with no body style advantage for the 4 cyl.. makes it utterly pointless.
