Are they hiding the 4 cylinder ?

There are other options out there. As transmissions get better and better and the computer control gets more sophisticated, as Toyota certainly is, the choice for engines becomes less limiting. If any car company could use just one motor for all their cars and trucks and just change the programming on the computer that controls it and the trans to get the type performance the vehicle required, they would do it. Camry motors in trucks.....why not. Ford did it with the Pinto motor years ago in the Ranger...look what happend to that success story. ;-)

But, getting back to the topic. The release of the Colorado to the press included a four cylinder model. There was nothing like that with the Taco.....has any one even seen a picture of a four cylinder 2016 taco ?

I love my '10 AC Prerunner 4cyl manual, it happens to be perfect for my use. I'll never need a 4X4, I tow just a small boat but need a truck all the time for the utility aspect, and I get 24mpg.

I agree the new 6cyl makes the 4 obsolete from a MPG standpoint, but I doubt it will have the same rock-bottom ownership costs over the 250k I plan to run my current truck. I still won't need to tow anything bigger, and the crap I haul in my 4cyl would still be the same in a new 6. So, the only compelling reasons for me to buy the new taco would be for the sake of having a new toy. Then I'd look at the prices Toyota is asking, and likely go to a full size 4X2 from the big 4. Waaaaay more room, comfort, better MPG and overall value IMO for a few bucks more.

One more thing for those who complain the 4 cyl is slow. Yes it is, dog slow and all that. But when you consider that the thing pushes a ladder frame truck with a very high center of gravity, with about the most unsophisticated suspension setup possible in a 2016 vehicle, I would ask why anyone would ask such a vehicle to go fast in the first place. My dog-slow 4 cyl is a perfect match for a chassis that is more like an ox-cart than a modern vehicle. The gen 3 suspension etc. sounds, despite some tweaks to put in the brochure, to be virtually identical. I'm a big BMW fan too; if you want to experience a suspension/chassis set up designed properly to go fast, take a M-sport-package equipped 440i for a spin (manual, of course). Then tell me again why your ox-cart taco needs to go fast!

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Toy fan, and I think the new gen will continue right along for Toyota. In my case, it's lost just enough value overall to me that I'd likely move on to something else. I don't think that's Toyota's fault, more my own for simply outgrowing the taco.

The 4 speed auto was the deal breaker. I didn't consider the four last fall and bought the six instead because of it. I use my tractor to tow heavy stuff and launch all
My boats on my own shore now. But, the tranny was the decider as my wife needs to drive the truck too and she is finished with manuals. Even though I am not in the market, with the six auto I have it could still be a deal
    Maker for many.

Wow, I'd forgotten this thread! I still can't figure out why so many people were angry about the 4 cylinder.

A lot of wise people bought proven 4 cylinders with long lasting, low wearing, reliable iron blocks, in spite of the vitriol. Others bought high (questionable?) tech small V6 engines with multiple fuel systems. Some of those people were inexplicably furious with the ones that bought the "pointless" 4 cylinders that got "worse" fuel economy than the V6.
It seems the 4 cylinder folks don't have much to complain about because we're smoothly tooling along vibration and noise free, getting 22 to 25 mpg (at the same speed as everyone else) with no problems to speak of...a large number of V6 people, not so much. Sometimes simple is better, if you don't need the extra capacity.

What you suggest, snefo, is realistic about the 2.7. Had two tacomas with that engine and they are tough and reliable. However, when one needs that extra meat and potatoes for pulling a load...or a hill, it forces a downshift or two or three until it runs out of gears. The v-6 feels a little anemic until you reach for the gusto and it will liven up, albeit at the cost of fuel ecomy. All this is a moot point being as my trade in was a 5.7 tundra....now theres some real power but guzzled fuel, hard to park, etc. I may have drifted off topic a little.
