I have the CX. Honestly, I would get a Leer. If I could go back I would get a leer instead of an ARE

I’m in the market for a topper, and I really like the OTR option. have you run both? Why would you not go with the ARE again?

The build quality on my ARE is garbage. Only a few years old and there’s leaks in multiple spots. I don’t know much about Leer itself but I do know a few people with ARE caps on other trucks and they all agree that the build quality is lacking

Where are you getting leaks? Man that’s unfortunate cuz I just called a dealer about a cuz with minimal addons and $3k was the estimate. That’s a lot of dough for a low quality product

There’s a mystery leak just above the glass door on the back, some leaks around the windoors where the aluminum frame wasn’t sealed at the factory, a few of the bolts for the roof rack are showing signs of leaks. It’s a hot mess. I would get some more opinions other than mine though, since I am just one person

For sure, I was just wondering where exactly you had leaks. Thanks for the response

I have a Revo I bought end of 2018. It was the first the shop had ordered and installed on a Tacoma. I liked the frameless back window but I had slide windows on the side so they have frames. First few back windows the epoxy on the hardware failed. It took them 4 tries to get the hardware epoxy right before it finally stuck to my back window. The shop (H&H out of Huntsville, AL) and A.R.E. GAVE me a new Yakima rack system for my troubles. Was aggravating at the moment but it saved me $500+ in the long run for my patience. 3+ years later the shell seems to be doing well. However I recently discovered a leak at the back window. I cannot see any adjustment at the top of the window, only at the bottom where the closing and security latches are. I've loaded the rack down with kayaks, ladders and such and, so far, no cracking in the paint. I had an A.R.E. on my previous Tacoma and loved it with no issues. that's why I stuck with A.R.E.

Seems like you have a different experience than the other dude, your leak is coming from the frameless window?

Read the most recent comments about ARE quality.... I have had horrible luck with getting toppers with significant paint cracking or bubbling along with many other smaller but still annoying issues. They dont have any quality control and you end up with a 5k topper with a poor paint finish and weird gaps. If you are reading this and have not made the purchase I recommend anything else but ARE.

I agree. I wish I waited for the SmartCap or gotten a Leer

I have an ARE CX with the windoors, led lights, and power locking rear window. I got it used in CL. It was less than a year old and a perfect match to my truck.

it fits great and I love it. My only complaint is the windoors. The frames seem bowed and the doors don’t close perfect. But for more than half off retail, it’s hardly an issue. And I have no leaks after adjusting everything.

My issues was that I paid full retail of almost 5k and had similar issues with the windoor as well as paint imperfections. Seems like they could do better and the sad thing is the shop guy said this is the new normal. He made it seem like quality from ARE is down across the board and almost every topper comes with a defect now.
