Hey guys! New to the forums and was looking for a little help. Been looking for a camper shell for a 2017 taco and don't know which one to go with. Been looking at the Leer 180 or the ARE MX. I know it's mostly personal prefence, but does anyone have anything great/bad to say about either brand?

People have had great experience with the Leer here, thus that is what I ordered

I have a Leer, it's been great. But I'd go with whatever is a better deal.

I'm seriously considering Snugtop. Seem to the be best built of the bunch and not too much more money. Better door latches. Better seals. Reinforced roof can hold up to 500lbs supposedly.

I've had good luck on three trucks with A.R.E tonneau covers. Color match good, quality good, fit good etc

I just ordered my second ARE v series

The fit and finish on the 3rd gen tacomas is really good and the shell is realtively cheap

Or get a snugtop those are the cadillacs of toppers but they are pricey

I got mine with carpet sliding front window and upgraded locks for $1410 otd with tax and install

Holy crap that's cheap. I was quoted about $2,500 for a Snugtop for my ride. Been told $2,200 or so for ARE/Leer in the past.

I'm waiting on my second Leer to come in. My first one was a 100xl on a Nissan Titan. Only complaint I had was the way the back glass had to be shut but I think it was more of an issue with the shape of the tailgate on the Titan. One of the hinges on the back glass had to be replaced after I took ownership but the dealer took care of it. The glue came loose on the glass side of the hinge. Other than those issues I loved it hence me paying an arm and a leg for my second one!!! My new one is a 100xr with removable/slider front glass, headliner, cargo net, remote locking back glass, and Thule racks.
Two more weeks till it comes in I can't wait.

Yeah I called quite a few dealers in town they have a coupon for the free carpet this month too. I thought it was a good deal so I finally pulled the trigger

A snugtop rebel was going to run right around $1900 otd with the same options. But I figured for $500 and the only big difference being the frameless rear glass I'd just get the ARE and call it a day

    Beautiful top

    Beautiful truck

    Amazing color

Any one else with a topper have there wife tell them it looks like an old mans truck?

But then loves it when we have to load stuff up and it's dry and locked in the shell

Snugtop Rebel was my first choice. However, I might go with the Hi-Liner when I get to do it. That extra few inches can make a big difference if you're spending time back there I think.

Wanna use to the topper for a dog eventually, maybe camping, and secure crap in the back instead of in my cab!

Thanks man. Whichever you go with I highly recommend (1) getting the side Windoors as it makes getting stuff in the front of the bed easier, (2) front fold down window as it allows you to clean you back rear cab window.

If you go with a snugtop get the sportsman pkg also as it gives you a roof that can support 500 lbs and also get the prolock with remote for the rear window as it makes getting into the back window as simple as unlocking the doors with your factory remote.

I got all those options on mine and it set me back ~$2600 otd installed

I have a 90 lbs German Shepard so yes I'm the bed and not in the cab!

Do they still make the hi-liner? My dealer told me they didn't make it anymore... that the base was the rebel and it went up from there

But yes I agree the extra inches defiantly make a difference when your back there leaning over

What'd you pay for the leer if you don't mind me asking?

I have yet to buy a topper. But Snugtop does still make the Hi-Liner: http://www.snugtop.com/product/hiliner

Was it worth getting the windoors? I can still change my order. It I though long and hard about this but decided no because our beds are only 5ft...

And yeah I can call tomorrow and change my sliding front window to the tilt sliding window so I can clean the glass like you stated

My mistake I was thinking of the cab-hi

Yes the hi-liner for functionally is a win in my book I just don't like the look of the raised roof but very usable

I love having the Windoors. Will use them to get into my ARB fridge as well as to get to things in the front of the bed without having to pull everything out the back. Note I also get Sliders on my Windoors which is worth getting as well.

Man! All of the responses have been very helpful! The one I was leaning towards was a Leer 180 (slight incline) with a track installed and they are asking $2900 installed?!?! These prices you guys are throwing out are insanely low! I might have to make a special trip to buy one! Haha!

Perkj, that is a beautiful camper and I think I might have to change my mind and go with a snug top!
