Hmm I don't know how you guys stand using the scangauge for gas mpg. When I had a subaru outback with a gas mpg gauge it drove me crazy. I was always worried about gas mileage.. but now all I care about is if I have enough gas to get to where I need to go :).

huh?? I just trip my odometer every fill-up and divide miles traveled by Gallons it took to fill-up. = mpg. Simple math really.

Just filled up on Thursday 18-Feb.

380.2 on the trip odometer and squezed 19.006 gals into it, because of the air pockets I like to keep adding every little bit till it won't take any
    more in the stand pipe.

That's 20 MPG consisting of city & hwy miles driven.

    Vehicle is stock.:D

You've got it all wrong.......Coast in gear, no fuel used. If you're in neutral, the engine is being fed fuel.

i dotn know man, if you are in gear coasting downa hill, the trani will slow you down, and engine will be revving at lets say 2k rpm, in neutral, thr rpm drop to 1k . either way fuel is being fed tto the engine to keep it running. never used a scan gauge, but i do know that when i would drive a vehicle with a mpg display gauge, it would always rise when going down hill in neutral

look on a wide band when ur in gear going down hill the engine leans out to 20 but if your in nutral it will rest at idle 14.7 so coasting in gear seems to use less fuel down hill

not sure what this means..not trying to be a wise ass, seriously, what does it mean to lean out to 20? 14.7?

It's the air fuel ratio. When you're in gear coasting down a hill the tires spin the engine (obviously going through the drive-train first) so it doesn't need fuel to keep the engine spin. When you're in neutral going down a hill the engine needs fuel to keep operating since it doesn't have anything to manually turn the crank. Coasting in neutral uses more fuel if the hill is steep enough to keep your momentum in gear. If it's a small hill where you need to apply throttle to keep your momentum then you would use less fuel coasting down the hill in neutral.

The scangauge indicates that when left in gear, after approximatly 1.5 seconds, and when the rpm is over 1000, the fuel flow is cut (to 0 litres/100 km.) Toyota's US product manager has stated this fact as well.
THE FUEL IS CUT WHEN COASTING IN GEAR, AND IT WILL CONSUME NONE ABOVE 1000 RPM, WHEREAS IDLEING IN GEAR DOWN A HILL WILL CONSUME APPROXIMATELY 1.5ish GPH, ALMOST DOUBLE WITH A/C ON.

Sorry to keep an old thread alive, but I have been trying to find an answer to this anyway for a day or so now.

Wouldn't dumping the exhaust(Cutting the pipe) behind the rear axle also improve MPG? The extra piping and 90* bend can't be helping air flow.

I just filled the tank on my PreRunner this afternoon. First tank on not yet broken in engine netted 23.4 mpg - about on par with what I was averaging in the Isuzu I-280 before.

The scenario with this tank included the initial drive home in severe headwinds and snow, some tailwind and cross winds the next day going to work, and LOTS of stop and go driving today. I keep my speeds to 55 mph max, and do drive to maximize fuel economy.

I just put on new Duratracs (265/70/17) and new Countersteer X's this Saturday, and I'm experiencing a significant drop in mpg. Granted I haven't been through a full tank, but my last tank before the wheel swap I was at 360 miles on a full tank. I filled up Saturday morning, and put the wheels on at lunch with about 5 miles driven on the current tank. I've since driven another 85 miles and I'm at half a tank.

I'm going to top off today and reset the odo then watch it throughout the week to see exactly where I'm at. I'm running 32-33psi in all 4 tires, and probably need to get an alignment, but it's hard to believe I'd see such a significant drop. If the current tank continues as the first half has indicated, I'll be lucky to hit 200 miles.

My mileage has been coming back up with the warmer weather. But I don't think it will ever be what it used to be, not as long as I'm stuck feeding it 10% corn.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
gotta take the wrong readings from ODO into account...i'm running 285s and still get 18.1 consistently. i got 19.2 the first full tank after i changed the plugs and oil.
