I guess this is a pretty newbie question but why would you run your tires as 35-40psi on road if they have a max psi rating of 80psi? Doesn't running such a low pressure absolutely destroy gas mileage?

I have no mods on my truck with exception of ARE Z shell, front plastic hood protector and metal mesh in front of my air filter. Also run Mobil 1 5W-30.
We still have winter fuel so that was not summer fuel however it was 93 octane. And my speed on the highway was around 60-65 MPH.
Tires are stock Dunlops with pressure at exact whats on the door.
Diff fluid are Toyota although replaced and will be replaced again. before summer.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
you run a high pressure and you'll start abnormally wearing the tire. best way is to do the chaulk method to get your correct pressure since they will be different for each size and make of tire. that being said, i run ~40 in my 285/75/16

Any time you change oil in the spring, it will give the illusion that your mileage went up. It would have improved due to the temperature anyhow. I have switched both my 09 & '10 over to 0W30. My scangauge tells me there is no measureable difference. But that's just me.

You should write Toyota, they could save millions on R&D. Just by changin oil, they could increase mileage as much as their million$ upgrade to the engine in the 4Runner.
Winter gas just vaporises easier, it does not affect mileage more than 2%. That is a myth.

In my stock 06 with the V6(besides the leer camper shell and 265/70/16 AT tires) I can get 23 on the freeway, not going faster than 70, with the auto. Around town 18-20, just crusin and not steppin on it. Thats also only running shell or chevron 91 octane, mobil 1 in engine, diffs, and transfer case.

THe key I think is the premium fuel/oil running in the truck. I used some cheap stuff on one tank of gas that my GF bought and insisted on cheap stuff. Mileage when way down on 87 cheapo gas.

so from last summer wheni picked up my 07 with 10k miles on it. and nothing being changed to the vehicle other than oil changes, and my most recent one being a mobil 1 oil change, i am now getting from 18.7 - 19.3 mpg regularly. i habe not really changed my driving habits at all, as i have driven over 300k miles in my days in 14 yrs of driving, so they are habits, and thigs seem to be getting better. thats my news

    oil change...
I just picked up a scan gauge about a week or two ago. I was normaly getting 16-16.5 mpg avg on a tank of gas. but now after adjusting my scangauge to show my "real" MPH I am actually getting better MPG than I though. driving to and from work I have been averaging 20-21 mpg that's at speeds from 60-70 mph

so people with bigger tires amy be getting better MPG than what they really think they are.

I'm surprised to hear you mileage has improved, have you calibrated the Scangauge to the actual amount of fuel used? Right out of the box, it is off by over 10%....

I just did a test today to see how my speed would affect my gas mileage. As I live in Germany I get to drive as fast as I want on the Autobahn. So on a full tank of Gas in the states driving at normal speeds I can go about 400 miles on a tank of gas. On a full tank of gas here driving at an average speed of 105 mph I went 366 miles. So I figured to hell with the gas mileage!

I have not read to much further in this tread, so someone may have already addressed this....
I don't agree with this. From what I have heard (talking to the gasoline companies directly, you can get corperate numbers from any station) the winter addative are added for pollution control, not to help make them ignite better in cold weather.

What makes sence to me is that in cold weather, the air is more dence, and there for has more oxegen per volume. Now, the more oxegen per volume/breath taken by the engine, the more fuel it needs to spray into the cilinder to keep the right air:fuel mixture. Therefor, lower fuel economy.

I base this on seeing my mileage go up and down, (same driveing habbits and locations; and SAME tank off gas) with temperature changes.

I live in Cleveland Oh. And in the spring and fall we have big temp changes. Like today and yesturday it has been in the low 40's for the high temp. 2 days ago, it was above 75.

Now my obsevations on the flutuation milage, happens with both summer gas and winter gas. So this is not something that can be attributed to the winter/summer gas problem. Combined with my flutuation happening within the same tank of gas; and the only change being the temp...therefor it must be the temp effecting it. (winter gas still gives me less milage though!)

Now....going off of memory (it has been a few years), what the gasoline companies told me was that the additive that they add to the winter gas is "oxegen". They say that all they do is oxegenate the fuel for the winter, and that they have to do it in winter per the FED GOVT./EPA, but do not have to do it in the summer.

What they told me fits my explination/therory of why milage drops with the winter gas, and also drops when it is cold v/s warmer.

Still bothers me that if we are trying to pollute less, why are we adding oxegen to the fuel because it gives us lower milage???? Seems like bullshit to me!!!

Same reason they add ethanol with the claim that it pollutes less. It takes quite a bit of energy to produce that ethanol, and then it substantially decreases our fuel efficiency so we have to use more of it for the same distance...

That shit really pisses me off.
