I had a 2009 prerunner, automatic, double cab, long bed and it was good on gas, 335 miles was the most I got for a full tank. Traded it in for a 2011 4x4, manual, double cab, short bed and the most I got was 306 a tank, the least was 265 and that's because my wife was driving. She revs so high before realizing it's time to shift gears.

again.. if you are looking at your gas gauge and think you know what kind of mileage you're getting you're doing it wrong.

I hear people say x miles per tank.. sounds like someone's looking at the fuel gauge.. which is well.. Why do cars have fuel gauges? Don't have one on my moto and I do just fine.

I'm no moron, but actually given the EPA's new fuel economy measurement methodology (started with 2008 model year), I would have guessed that 16/20 would have been on the low side of things for me. But I generally post a solid 18.5 mpg .. so smack in the middle.

But that is surprising to me, because the way I drive and the place I live is free from so many of the conditions now included in the EPA's testing ... for example sitting in stop & go traffic (for the most part non-existant in my world) or blasting the AC (on a rare day). Plus I drive with a light foot.

It doesn't help matters that every Toyota salesman I talked to also said that the numbers were low, and that their customers were reporting "real world" numbers of 20/24.

When I first heard that, I went home and researched it, then went back and called the salesman on his BS. He just told me he was reporting what he knew. I figured maybe it was just this one sales guy, but surprisingly at every single dealership I went to, I heard a similar story. As far as I'm concerned, that's fraud, and that ALL of them said the same thing, there seemed to be some collusion going on. That really bothered me.

In the end I'm satisfied with my mileage, but I am not impressed. And I do think people who are seeing 15-17 have some right to complain. Granted if you are running a 6" lift on mud tires on asphalt, you're gonna take a big hit. But it shouldn't be all the way down to 12-13 as some have reported. In the end, for many, it turns out the EPA numbers are still high ... and it doesn't help that Toyota salespeople are claiming higher numbers still.

NEVER EVER EVER..believe a salesman at the dealership. NEVER...They have ONE mission..a good salesman will find your issue points and overcome them.

The information out there is plentiful and real world. I know before I bought this truck it "may" get 16 MPG around town. I am getting closer to 18. I did not ask the sales person because I already knew from real world testimony and they parrot what they are told to say for every possible deal breaking question that comes up.

That said my Honda EX-L Couple got 21 under the same conditions (although 28 highway which I rarely needed) . I was willing to take the small hit to have a far more useful truck again,

i havent read all the pages but your rpms have alot to do with it. first of all chips dont work. second the best way to improve gas mileage is coasting and keeping your rpms under 2000. i have a 6inch lift with 35s and 20 inch rockstars and im getting around 12 to 13 miles to the gallon which isnt the best but its deff alot better than the people getting 14 with all stock

    neglect, mostly.
i dont do the high octane deal. im driving 10 miles round trip to class everyday on my pretty much stock taco in the traffic hell city of raleigh. then it's about an hour drive home on the weekends down the 40hwy. when home a lot of rural driving and as long as im nice on the petal the whole time i get a steady 17-18 mpg. and half that tanks in the city, so im very happy with my taco compared to the jeep i just got rid of.

Dealer installed Leather, Truck Cover USA roll up cover, Pop n Lock, Bilstein 5100's on 4 corners set at 1.75, Rear Spring TSB. USA Spec iPhone adapter, 265/75/16 Mickey Thompson ATZs.
I traded an F150 for mine because I thought I could get near 20MPGs with a Tacoma...

I have been checking my mileage very closely the last couple of weeks and it sucks... Half hwy and half local... 16.8 MPGs... All local driving no interstate... 17.4 MPG.... All interstate no local... 16.4MPG. (yes... I did not get that backwards)

I run about 75MPH on the interstate, I have 265/75/16 Mickey Thompson ATZs, 5100s at 1.75 in the front and TSB with 1" block in the rear.

I ran bigger tires and more lift on my F150 with a 5.4L V8 and got almost the same.

I realize the lift and slightly bigger tires hurt it but dang... You would think it would get better than that. Some on here claim more than 20.... a few claim over 26.... Did I get a lemon? I also own a FJ Cruiser and it gets consistantly 18.5 to 19.8 local and over 20 on the interstate. Same driver, same roads... bigger tires. go figure.

Are you taking into account your oversized tires? With each rotation of your tire, you go further than what the odometer says. That means 1 mile on the odometer is really more than 1 mile. Which means when you figure your milage, you need to add to the total. You can use the Tire Calculator : tire calculator or http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tirecalc.php

There are a few other threads about tires: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/4-...y-could-result-when-increasing-tire-size.html

Light foot makes and low rpm make a difference. 60mph get 22, 75mph get 20. Hard to keep in under 70mph on interestate (4cyl 4x4, 5mt)
